U.S. Defense Secretary\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politics.com\/c\/factcheck\/the-nato-alliance-is-holding-strong-on-ukraine-but-fractures-are-emerging\" rel=\"noopener\">Lloyd Austin was unusually candid<\/a>\u00a0about the situation in Ukraine when he told the allies in Germany at Ramstein Air Base on January 20, \u201cWe have a window of opportunity here, between now and the spring,\u201d admitting, \u201cThat\u2019s not a long time.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Glenn_Diesen\/status\/1616873849928171521\" rel=\"noopener\">Alexei Arestovich<\/a>, President Zelensky\u2019s recently fired advisor and unofficial \u201cSpinmeister,\u201d was more direct. He expressed his own doubts that Ukraine can win its war with Russia and he now questions whether Ukraine will even survive the war.\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/kyivindependent.com\/news-feed\/spiegel-german-intelligence-alarmed-by-high-losses-of-ukrainian-army-in-bakhmut\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukrainian losses<\/a>\u2014<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-61742736\" rel=\"noopener\">at least 150,000 dead<\/a>\u00a0including 35,000 missing in action and presumed dead\u2014have fatally weakened Ukrainian forces resulting in\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/jun\/10\/ukraine-casualty-rate-russia-war-tipping-point\" rel=\"noopener\">a fragile Ukrainian defensive posture<\/a>\u00a0that will likely shatter under the crushing weight of attacking Russian forces in the next few weeks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/russia-ukraine-war-bakhmut-1.6708783\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukraine\u2019s materiel losses are equally severe<\/a>. These include thousands of\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/airtable.com\/shrWRJsWz0HY3UW02\/tblGOzFRGPpsw551J\" rel=\"noopener\">tanks and armored infantry fighting vehicles, artillery systems, air defense platforms<\/a>, and weapons of all calibers. These totals include the equivalent of\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.republicworld.com\/world-news\/russia-ukraine-crisis\/us-facing-shortage-of-javelin-anti-tank-missiles-post-supplies-to-ukraine-report-articleshow.html\" rel=\"noopener\">seven years of Javelin missile production<\/a>. In a setting where Russian artillery systems can fire nearly 60,000 rounds of all types\u2014rockets, missiles, drones, and hard-shell ammunition\u2014a day, Ukrainian forces are hard-pressed to answer these Russian salvos with 6,000 rounds daily.\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realcleardefense.com\/2023\/01\/21\/stocking_ukraine_could_generate_foreign_military_sales_boom_877057.html\" rel=\"noopener\">New platform and ammunition packages<\/a>\u00a0for Ukraine may enrich the Washington community, but they cannot change these conditions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Predictably, Washington\u2019s frustration with the collective West\u2019s failure to stem the tide of Ukrainian defeat is growing. In fact, the frustration is rapidly giving way to desperation.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/in-60-seconds-by-aei\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Rubin<\/a>, a former Bush appointee and avid supporter of America\u2019s permanent conflicts in the Middle East and Afghanistan,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/op-eds\/ukraine-needs-nuclear-weapons-after-the-russia-war-is-over\/\" rel=\"noopener\">vented his frustration<\/a>\u00a0in a\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>1945<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>article asserting that, \u201cif the world\u00a0allows Russia\u00a0to\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/09\/putin-wants-russias-borders-changed-history-says-he-should-be-quiet\/\" rel=\"noopener\">remain a unitary state<\/a>, and if it allows\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/us.macmillan.com\/books\/9781466871069\/putinism\" rel=\"noopener\">Putinism<\/a>\u00a0to survive Putin, then, Ukraine should be allowed to maintain its own nuclear deterrence, whether it joins NATO or not.\u201d On its face, the suggestion is reckless, but the statement does accurately reflect the anxiety in Washington circles that Ukrainian defeat is inevitable.<\/p>\n<p>NATO\u2019s members were never strongly united behind Washington\u2019s crusade to fatally weaken Russia. The governments of Hungary and Croatia are simply acknowledging the wider\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Szazadveg\/status\/1615330752958451712\" rel=\"noopener\">European public\u2019s opposition to war<\/a>\u00a0with Russia and lack of support for Washington\u2019s desire to postpone Ukraine\u2019s foreseeable defeat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Though sympathetic to the Ukrainian people,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apolut.net\/ukraine-krieg-northstream-terroranschlag-reparationsforderungen-von-wolfgang-effenberger\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Berlin did not support<\/a>\u00a0all-out war with Russia on Ukraine\u2019s behalf. Now, Germans are also uneasy with the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/german-army-chief-fed-up-with-neglect-countrys-military-2022-02-24\/\" rel=\"noopener\">catastrophic condition<\/a>\u00a0of the German armed forces.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Retired\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/cv\/milcom\/kujat-e.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">German Air Force General (four-star equivalent) Harald Kujat<\/a>, former chairman of the NATO Military Committee,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Szazadveg\/status\/1615330752958451712\" rel=\"noopener\">severely criticized Berlin<\/a>\u00a0for allowing Washington to railroad Germany into conflict with Russia, noting that several decades of German political leaders actively disarmed Germany and thus deprived Berlin of authority or credibility in Europe. Though actively suppressed by the German government and media, his comments are resonating strongly with the German electorate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The blunt fact is that in its efforts to secure victory in its proxy war with Russia, Washington ignores historical reality. From the 13th century onward, Ukraine was a region dominated by larger, more powerful national powers, whether Lithuanian, Polish, Swedish, Austrian, or Russian.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the aftermath of the First World War, abortive Polish designs for an independent Ukrainian State were conceived to\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/400397.White_Eagle_Red_Star\" rel=\"noopener\">weaken Bolshevik Russia<\/a>. Today, Russia is not communist, nor does Moscow seek the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/read.aupress.ca\/read\/truth-behind-bars\/section\/cc6344e2-5731-4a34-92a4-3240fce7fd31\" rel=\"noopener\">destruction of the Polish State<\/a>\u00a0as Trotsky, Lenin, Stalin, and their followers did in 1920.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>So where is Washington headed with its proxy war against Russia? The question deserves an answer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Sunday December 7, 1941, U.S. Ambassador Averell Harriman was with Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill having dinner at Churchill\u2019s home when the BBC broadcast the news that the Japanese had attacked the U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor.\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/10885.The_Wise_Men\" rel=\"noopener\">Harriman was visibly shocked<\/a>. He simply repeated the words, \u201cThe Japanese have raided Pearl Harbor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harriman need not have been surprised. The Roosevelt administration had practically done everything in its power to\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.org\/news\/article.asp?id=1930\" rel=\"noopener\">goad Tokyo into attacking U.S. forces<\/a>\u00a0in the Pacific with a series of\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalww2museum.org\/events-programs\/events\/128619-stalins-war-new-history-world-war-ii\" rel=\"noopener\">hostile policy decisions<\/a>\u00a0culminating in Washington\u2019s oil embargo during the summer of 1941.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the Second World War, Washington was lucky with timing and allies. This time it\u2019s different. Washington and its NATO allies are advocating\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/op-eds\/putin-should-be-sentenced-to-death-for-his-war-crimes-in-ukraine\/\" rel=\"noopener\">a full-blown war against Russia<\/a>, the devastation and breakup of the Russian Federation, as well as the destruction of millions of lives in Russia and Ukraine.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Washington emotes. Washington does not think, and it is also\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hoover.org\/research\/too-soft-power\" rel=\"noopener\">overtly hostile to empiricism and truth<\/a>. Neither we nor our allies are prepared to fight all-out war with Russia, regionally or globally. The point is, if war breaks out between Russia and the United States, Americans should not be surprised.
