{"id":1135573,"date":"2023-02-05T12:10:48","date_gmt":"2023-02-05T17:10:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/pro-russia-chant-directed-at-ukrainian-basketball-player\/1135573\/"},"modified":"2023-02-05T12:10:48","modified_gmt":"2023-02-05T17:10:48","slug":"pro-russia-chant-directed-at-ukrainian-basketball-player","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/pro-russia-chant-directed-at-ukrainian-basketball-player\/1135573\/","title":{"rendered":"Pro-Russia chant directed at Ukrainian basketball player"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Colorado State University is apologizing after some of its student spectators directed a pro-Russia chant at a Ukrainian student-athlete on the opposing team at a Saturday night basketball game.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Officials <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CSURams\/status\/1622105290220130311?s=20&amp;t=sH2KIlFRr3BQPtmJLJNC_A\" rel=\"noopener\">said in a tweet<\/a> they learned after the game &#8220;that a small group of individuals in our student section chanted &#8216;Russia&#8217; at a student-athlete from Utah State, who is from Ukraine.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On behalf of Colorado State, we apologize to the student-athlete and Utah State,&#8221; the school said in a follow-up tweet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every participant, student, and fan should feel welcomed in our venues, and for something like this to have occurred is unacceptable at Colorado State,&#8221; the tweet thread <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CSURams\/status\/1622105295047753729?s=20&amp;t=sH2KIlFRr3BQPtmJLJNC_A\" rel=\"noopener\">concluded<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While the university didn&#8217;t name the student who was targeted in its tweets, NBC affiliate KSL of Salt Lake City <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ksl.com\/article\/50572309\/colorado-state-apologizes-for-offensive-chant-directed-at-utah-states-max-shulga-\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that Utah State junior guard Max Shulga was the target of the chant, which occurred while he was attempting free throws near the end of the game.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Shulga was born in Ukraine&#8217;s capital of Kiev and attended high school in Spain, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/utahstateaggies.com\/sports\/mens-basketball\/roster\/max-shulga\/9326\" rel=\"noopener\">according to his official biography<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>KSL <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ksl.com\/article\/50364843\/utah-states-max-shulga-standing-strong-for-native-ukraine-aggies-postseason\" rel=\"noopener\">reported last year<\/a> that Shulga&#8217;s family still resides in Kiev, and that he <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ksl.com\/article\/50357144\/on-emotional-night-utah-state-falls-to-colorado-state-as-it-honors-seniors\" rel=\"noopener\">draped a Ukrainian flag over himself <\/a>at the start of the first game following the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/russia-launches-attacks-key-ukrainian-cities-rcna17482\" rel=\"noopener\">Russian invasion of Ukraine<\/a>.
