{"id":1156656,"date":"2023-02-18T04:13:36","date_gmt":"2023-02-18T09:13:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/heres-where-you-can-still-buy-residence-permits\/1156656\/"},"modified":"2023-02-18T04:13:36","modified_gmt":"2023-02-18T09:13:36","slug":"heres-where-you-can-still-buy-residence-permits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/heres-where-you-can-still-buy-residence-permits\/1156656\/","title":{"rendered":"Here&#8217;s Where You Can (Still) Buy Residence Permits"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ftpimagefix\" style=\"float:left\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/geopolitical\/heres-where-you-can-still-buy-residence-permits\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100\" alt=\"Infographic: Where You Can Buy Residence Permits | Statista\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.statcdn.com\/Infographic\/images\/normal\/29336.jpeg\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Here&#8217;s Where You Can (Still) Buy Residence Permits<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>There are <strong>several ways to obtain the citizenship<\/strong> of a country.<\/p>\n<p>As well as simply being born there or being the descendant of one of its citizens, nations allow permits through marriage, adoption or naturalization &#8211; the latter of which is based on an application-related executive decision. <strong>Until the outbreak of the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/topics\/9087\/russia-ukraine-war-2022\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukraine war<\/a>, additional &#8220;citizenship by investment&#8221; (CBI) programs were also offered in the three EU member states of Cyprus, Malta and Bulgaria. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/29336\/where-you-can-buy-residence-permits\/\" rel=\"noopener\"> Statista&#8217;s Anna Fleck and Florian Zandt note<\/a>,<strong> these are more commonly known as &#8220;golden passports.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By investing a certain amount of money, it becomes possible to obtain citizenship without the bureaucratic hurdles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bulgaria and Cyprus have now abolished this method of granting citizenship, while Malta refuses to grant such passports specifically to Russians and Belarusians. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, &#8220;Golden visas&#8221;, i.e. residence permits granted in exchange for investments in the economy, still exist in several other EU countries, as the chart below shows.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><em>You will find more infographics at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chartoftheday\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Statista<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Especially in Southern Europe, so-called &#8220;residency by investment&#8221; (RBI) programs are fairly common.<\/strong> While this practice was recently abolished in Portugal and Ireland, Spain, Greece, Cyprus and Malta, among others, still grant residency rights in exchange for economic investments. According to a 2019 study by the EU Commission, more than 130,000 people were either naturalized or granted residence rights under CBI and RBI between 2011 and 2019, which had generated a conservatively estimated total revenue of \u20ac21.4 billion for the countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Both practices have come under fire from officials.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As early as 2014, the EU spoke out against such programs, arguing, among other things, that they run counter to anti-discrimination requirements and could potentially encourage\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/28953\/eu-corruption-perceptions\/\" rel=\"noopener\">corruption<\/a>\u00a0and money laundering.
