Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks kicked off their much-anticipated, nine-date \u201cTwo Icons, One Night\u201d co-headlining tour at Los Angeles\u2019s SoFi Stadium on Friday, March 10, and the evening featured not one but two surprise duets between the Gold Dust Woman and Piano Man that had the 70,000-capacity crowd cheering.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But it was Nicks\u2019s tributes to two other much-missed rock icons that had the crowd in tears \u2014 and Nicks\u2019s name trending on Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Nicks played first, delivering a hits-packed set that included solo songs like \u201cStand Back,\u201d \u201cEdge of Seventeen,\u201d and \u201cIf Anyone Falls\u201d as well as Fleetwood Mac classics like \u201cDreams,\u201d \u201cGypsy,\u201d \u201cRhiannon,\u201d and \u201cSara\u201d and a cover of Buffalo Springfield\u2019s \u201cFor What It’s Worth.\u201d Four songs into her set, the two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee performed \u201cStop Draggin’ My Heart Around,\u201d the Bella Donna <\/em>single that she said her late friend Tom Petty \u201cgifted\u201d her in 1981 \u2014 and the SoFi audience absolutely erupted when Joel unexpectedly emerged from the stage wings during the second verse to take on the Petty role. Later, during Joel\u2019s main set, Nicks returned the favor by guesting on his tune \u201cAnd So It Goes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nicks also reprised her crowd-pleasing cover of Petty\u2019s \u201cFree Fallin\u2019\u201d\u2014 which she\u2019d previously performed on tour with Fleetwood Mac when Mike Campbell, former guitarist for Petty\u2019s band the Heartbreakers, played in the 2018-2019 Mac lineup<\/a>. \u201cFree Fallin\u2019\u201d provided a powerful moment Friday, but it was Nicks\u2019s encore of Fleetwood Mac\u2019s coming-of-age ballad \u201cLandslide\u201d \u2014 dedicated to her late friend and bandmate Christine McVie, while a slideshow of vintage Nicks\/McVie photographs ran on the venue\u2019s wall-sized video screens \u2014 that resonated the deepest.<\/p>\n

When \u201cLandslide\u201d ended, Nicks paused and bowed her head against her microphone stand, her eyes brimming with tears. \u201cI have to imagine she\u2019s still here. It\u2019s all I can do,\u201d she said, choked up, as her band members supportively surrounded her to take their final bow. Friday marked the first time that Nicks had performed a public concert since McVie\u2019s November 2022 death<\/a>.<\/p>\n
