The 10 Rules Of Propaganda<\/span><\/p>\n

Lord Arthur Ponsonby was a British diplomat and politician, dates 1871\u20131946.<\/p>\n

This keen and cagey fellow pinpointed 10 rules of propaganda. <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

They are these:<\/p>\n

\n

1. We don\u2019t want war, we are only defending ourselves.<\/em><\/p>\n

2. The other guy is solely responsible for this war.<\/em><\/p>\n

3. Our adversary\u2019s leader is evil and looks evil.<\/em><\/p>\n

4. We are defending a noble purpose, not special interest.<\/em><\/p>\n

5. The enemy is purposefully causing atrocities; we only commit mistakes.<\/em><\/p>\n

6. The enemy is using unlawful weapons.<\/em><\/p>\n

7. We have very little losses, the enemy is losing big.<\/em><\/p>\n

8. Intellectuals and artists support our cause.<\/em><\/p>\n

9. Our cause is sacred.<\/em><\/p>\n

10. Those who doubt our propaganda are traitors.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Just Look at the News<\/strong><\/h2>\n

A daily scan of the newswires calls to mind three or more of these propaganda rules. On some days, six or seven. On others still, all 10.<\/p>\n

We refer specifically to the conflict presently arage in the eastern European nation of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Let us now consider these rules. We will not take up each of them since some rules relate closely to others. We will instead weld these together. To proceed\u2026<\/p>\n

\n

1. We don\u2019t want war, we are only defending ourselves.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

2. The other guy is solely responsible for this war.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

On how many occasions have you read or heard condemnations of Mr. Putin\u2019s \u201cunprovoked\u201d act of aggression?<\/p>\n

To phrase it differently, when has it\u00a0not<\/em>\u00a0been described as unprovoked?<\/p>\n

Yet a man can argue very persuasively that Mr. Putin\u2019s war was indeed provoked.<\/p>\n

The Russian autocrat warned on several occasions that NATO expansion into Ukraine was a \u201cred line.\u201d<\/p>\n

Russia would not abide the NATO dagger pressing against its vitals (parts of Ukraine actually lie east of Moscow).<\/p>\n

Yet the NATO alliance had announced its intentions to incorporate Ukraine \u2014 despite Vladimir\u2019s moans and grimaces.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0de Facto<\/em>\u00a0NATO Member<\/strong><\/h2>\n

It is true that no formal offer of membership has come. Yet for years the United States and its NATO allies were arming and training Ukrainian forces.<\/p>\n

Why do you think these Ukrainian forces have performed so excellently?<\/p>\n

Some have in fact referred to Ukraine as a\u00a0de facto<\/em>\u00a0NATO member. It has merely been awaiting the\u00a0de jure<\/em>\u00a0formality of actual membership.<\/p>\n

You may argue that Mr. Putin\u2019s invasion was unjustified. You may argue that it was unnecessary. Your editor himself has maintained these very points.<\/p>\n

Yet you cannot argue that it was unprovoked.<\/p>\n

Putin\u2019s Evil!<\/strong><\/h2>\n
\n

3. Our adversary\u2019s leader is evil and looks evil.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

9. Our cause is sacred.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Here is a very condensed sample of headlines regarding the blackened state of Mr. Putin\u2019s soul:<\/p>\n

\u201cVladimir Putin \u2014 \u2018Evil on the Level of Joseph Stalin\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, Putin Is Evil\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPutin Is Evil, Not Mentally Ill, a Psychological Explanation\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2019Terrifying\u2019 Putin Driven by \u2018Evil Forces,\u2019 Says ECB\u2019s Christine Lagarde\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow Vladimir Putin Became Evil\u201d<\/p>\n

And is this not the very face of evil?<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

The title of the magazine article affixed to this caption bears the title:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Secret Source of Putin\u2019s Evil\u201d<\/p>\n

Now you have the flavor of it. We could continue but mercy forbids it.<\/p>\n

Is Putin Really Evil?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Yet how do these demonologists know if the man is evil? Have they looked under the hood\u2026 and glanced his soul?<\/p>\n

Perhaps the man is psychologically impaired. Perhaps he goes by a different morality. Perhaps he is simply misguided.<\/p>\n

Or perhaps he simply believes his nation is under threat and that his invasion is justified.<\/p>\n

No \u2014 not justified \u2014 necessary.<\/p>\n

We would not claim that he is an especially congenial fellow. We would not claim that he is \u201cnice.\u201d<\/p>\n

But evil? That we are not prepared to say.<\/p>\n

Yet we are prepared to say \u2014 and will say \u2014 that for the past year propaganda has enjoyed a very brisk circulation.<\/p>\n

Evil on the level of Joseph Stalin, as the one headline screamed? This is the work of the propagandist.<\/p>\n

No Special Interest?<\/strong><\/h2>\n
\n

4. We are defending a noble purpose, not special interest.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Defending Ukraine may certainly qualify as a \u201cnoble purpose.\u201d We do not contend otherwise.<\/p>\n

Yet there are several arms manufacturers who presently drive an excellent trade.<\/p>\n

They must replace all the armaments that have been dispatched to \u2014 and continue to be dispatched to \u2014 Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Are they not a special interest?<\/p>\n

Meantime, our spies inform us that a disturbing portion of monies parading under the banner of \u201cUkrainian aid\u201d has been diverted to the pockets of Ukrainian oligarchs.<\/p>\n

We would sort these oligarchs into the category of\u00a0 \u201cspecial interest.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe Don\u2019t Do Those Things\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n
\n

5. The enemy is purposefully causing atrocities; we only commit mistakes.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

We are told that Russia\u2019s calendar of sins is endless. These hellcats are shooting projectiles into apartment buildings, hospitals, schools, churches.<\/p>\n

Yet we are likewise told that Russia suffers from an acute ammunition lack. Why would these Russians waste valuable ammunition on these valueless targets?<\/p>\n

Perhaps such targets were struck by accident. It is war and incidents as these are nearly inevitable.<\/p>\n

Perhaps even Ukrainian forces struck some of these structures unintentionally.<\/p>\n

We recall one instance in which a Russian missile struck very near the Polish border, murdering two. As chance would have it the \u201cRussian missile\u201d was an erring Ukrainian air defense missile.<\/p>\n

Perhaps Ukrainian forces fired upon Russian forces from these sites. Russians would be justified to return the fire.<\/p>\n

Reports of Russian massacring of civilians proliferate widely. Yet closer examination reveals that at least some of these claims are of very dubious validity.<\/p>\n

We would be stunned and gobsmacked if atrocities of various sorts have not occurred \u2014 perpetrated by both sides.<\/p>\n

It is, after all, war. And war is the very negation of civilization.<\/p>\n

Yet there is little to no evidence that atrocities are official Russian policy.<\/p>\n

That, we hazard to say, is propaganda.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s Using Chemical Weapons!<\/strong><\/h2>\n
\n

6. The enemy is using unlawful weapons.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cKyiv Claims Russia Used Banned Chemical Weapon\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRussia\u2019s Tear Gas Bombings in Ukraine May Be First Step in Dangerous Chemical Escalation\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUkraine\u2019s Battlefield Is Haunted by Putin\u2019s Chemical Weapons Legacy\u201d<\/p>\n

We assigned our spies the case. They inform us there exists no evidence of Russian chemical weapons use.<\/p>\n

Videos have circulated \u2014 however \u2014 of Ukrainian soldiers preparing chemical weapons for battlefield use. Other videos circulate of Russian soldiers gagging on these chemical agents.<\/p>\n

We cannot confirm their trueness.<\/p>\n

270,000 Russian Casualties?<\/strong><\/h2>\n
\n

7. We have very little losses, the enemy is losing big.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Source after source cites claims of unspeakable Russian deaths and woundings. Figures of 270,000 Russian casualties have been proposed.<\/p>\n

Yet the original invasion force consisted only of 190,000 men. Are they all \u2014 plus 80,000 others \u2014 dead or injured?<\/p>\n

The British Broadcasting Corporation decided to so some spade work. They attempted to discern the true number of Russian fatalities. This they did by poring through death notices, funeral announcements, social media and other venues.<\/p>\n

What did they discover?<\/p>\n

They could only identify the names of 16,071 confirmed Russian fatalities. They concede the possibility that they are undercounting the butcher\u2019s bill by as much as 40%.<\/p>\n

In all, BBC places Russia\u2019s total irretrievable losses (wounded, killed or missing people) at some 144,500.<\/p>\n

These figures nonetheless place the actual casualty roster \u2014 both killings and woundings \u2014 far below the mainstream telling.<\/p>\n

We are loathe to employ the word \u201conly\u201d when discussing deaths and woundings. It is a morbid affair. Each man is a unique human creature crafted in the image of his creator.<\/p>\n

Yet the BBC\u2019s sleuthing indicates strongly that Russian casualty figures are extravagantly exaggerated.<\/p>\n

It is in keeping to Propaganda Rule no. 7.<\/p>\n

\n

8. Intellectuals and artists support our cause.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

How many intellectuals and artists boast Twitter accounts bearing an image of the Ukrainian flag?<\/p>\n

They are nearly beyond count.<\/p>\n

\n

10. Those who doubt our propaganda are traitors.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Your patriotic editor has been labeled traitorous on many, many occasions \u2014 by readers and colleagues alike.<\/p>\n

The Propaganda War<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Does Russia transmit its own propaganda? We are certain that it does.<\/p>\n

Upon reflection we must amend the prior statement \u2014 we suspect strongly that Russia transmits its own propaganda. We cannot be certain.<\/p>\n

That is because none of it is allowed in. It is all censored out by the Western press. They have erected a great cordon walling off Russian propaganda.<\/p>\n

How else does one explain the universal media claims of Ukrainian righteousness and Russian evil? Of Ukrainian brio and Russian incompetence? Of Ukrainian victory and Russian defeat?<\/p>\n

We will merely state that we have been privy to\u2026\u00a0conflicting<\/em>\u2026 reports.<\/p>\n

Yet we are aware that by posting the 10 Rules of Propaganda\u2026 we will be accused of distributing propaganda \u2014 Russian propaganda.<\/p>\n

We plead\u00a0nolo contendere\u2026<\/em>\u00a0comrade.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
