Done.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>New York will permanently lower the math and reading proficiency standards after embarrassing results in state testing. It is akin to shortening the 100 yards dash to 50 yards to stay competitive on speed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The media reported that<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cA scoring committee that reports to the Board of Regents said Monday that they must take into account the results of last year\u2019s tests for students in grades three through eight. Some schools posted shocking results \u2014 in Schenectady,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/news\/article\/Schenectady-grapples-with-wake-up-call-after-only-17571474.php\" rel=\"noopener\">no eighth grader<\/a>\u00a0who took the math test scored as proficient.\u00a0And the scores for the third through eighth grade tests throughout the state were\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/news\/article\/new-york-fourth-graders-test-scores-twice-bad-17838822.php\" rel=\"noopener\">much lower in 2022<\/a>\u00a0than in 2019, a result no doubt of the absence of in-person learning during the first year and beyond of the COVID-19 pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>This may seem insane to anyone with a proficiency in logic, but it is being shrugged off by many in New York.<\/strong> There is now an acceptance that the public schools cannot actually educate students to proficiency levels needed to succeed in the modern world. In the meantime,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/ohio-school-district-switching-4-day-school-week-were-burnt-out\" rel=\"noopener\">some districts are moving to a four-day work week<\/a>\u00a0for teachers to reduce stress.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2021\/10\/15\/achieving-equity-through-mediocrity-why-elimination-of-gifted-programs-should-worry-us-all\/\" rel=\"noopener\">previously discussed<\/a>\u00a0the elimination of gifted and talented programs to achieve equity by artificially lowering everyone to the same level.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other schools have<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2021\/10\/02\/do-we-need-f-grades-more-schools-are-saying-no\/\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0eliminated the \u201cF\u201d<\/a>\u00a0to guarantee 100 percent passage rates.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Still others have\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2021\/08\/10\/oregon-suspends-need-for-high-school-graduates-to-be-proficient-in-reading-writing-and-math\/\" rel=\"noopener\">suspended proficiency standards<\/a>\u00a0to simply graduate students who cannot reach required levels in writing, math, and English.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There is also a move to end<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2021\/08\/10\/oregon-suspends-need-for-high-school-graduates-to-be-proficient-in-reading-writing-and-math\/\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0standardized testing<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a prior column, I was particularly moved by the frustration of a mother in Baltimore\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2021\/03\/05\/baltimore-student-who-failed-all-but-three-classes-in-four-years-was-ranked-in-top-half-of-his-class\/\" rel=\"noopener\">recently who complained<\/a>\u00a0that her son was in the top half of his class despite failing all but three of his classes. Graduating students without proficiency in English or Math is the worst possible path for these students, schools and society.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It is the dumbing down of America but administrators, boards, and unions insist that it is better for these students, who face dismal prospects for future employment. <\/strong>In the meantime, we are pouring billions into schools that cannot produce a single proficient student in basic subjects.
