Chris Sununu (R) criticized fellow Republicans, including former President Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, for their increasingly isolationist views on the war in Ukraine, writing in an op-ed that opposing U.S. aid \u201cis not a viable foreign policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimply opposing aid to Ukraine because President Biden supports it is not a viable foreign policy,\u201d Sununu, who is mulling a potential presidential run, <a target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2023\/03\/18\/chris-sununu-ukraine-republican-party\/\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote in The New York Times.<\/a> \u201cTo abandon Ukraine would set off a negative chain of events for U.S. interests domestically and abroad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sununu\u2019s targeting of the rising tide of anti-Ukrainian sentiment in the Republican Party comes after Trump and DeSantis made comments in the past weeks that have stirred controversy on the issue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump said in response to a Fox News survey of declared and potential 2024 presidential candidates that Europe was relying on the U.S. to defend it against Russia, which he said is \u201cunfair to us.\u201d DeSantis argued in the same survey that supporting Ukraine was not in the \u201cvital national interests\u201d of America. The Florida governor also referred to the war as a \u201cterritorial dispute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Russian invasion of Ukraine is not a \u2018territorial dispute,\u2019 as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis described it this month,\u201d Sununu wrote in Saturday\u2019s op-ed. \u201cRussia is engaged in a war against an innocent people, and it must be condemned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sununu took even harsher aim at Trump, looping him in with Republicans who the New Hampshire governor said have lost their \u201cmoral compass\u201d on foreign policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome in the Republican Party have lost their moral compass on foreign policy, as evidenced by former president Donald Trump, who once called Putin\u2019s invasion \u2018genius\u2019 and \u2018savvy,\u2019\u201d Sununu wrote. \u201cAs Republicans, we should support freedom, not abandon it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GOP lawmakers who have pushed back on the Biden administration for the level of U.S. support to Ukraine have argued that the government should not be offering a foreign country a \u201cblank check\u201d to fight a war.
