After months of waving off taunts from Donald Trump<\/a>, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis hit back \u2013 and he didn\u2019t pull any punches.<\/p>\n

DeSantis took shots at the former president\u2019s character and leadership during an interview set to run Thursday, which British media personality Piers Morgan previewed in the New York Post. This marks the first time the governor has outwardly criticized Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n

‘Winner’ is a better nickname than ‘meatball Ron’<\/h2>\n

Despite months of taunting, DeSantis hadn\u2019t engaged with Trump\u2019s attempts to provoke him<\/a>, which has grown increasingly common as DeSantis has emerged as Trump\u2019s top challenger<\/a> for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo me, it\u2019s just background noise,\u201d DeSantis said of Trump\u2019s taunts.<\/p>\n

And of the nicknames Trump has coined for the Florida governor, among which is \u201cRon DeSanctimonious\u201d and ”Meatball Ron,” DeSantis said he didn\u2019t mind what people called him as long as they also called him a \u201cwinner.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not important for me to be fighting with people on social media. It\u2019s not accomplishing anything for the people I represent,\u201d DeSantis added. \u201cIf I got involved in all the under tow I would not be able to be an effective Governor<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

DeSantis slams Trump\u2019s chaotic presidency, leadership<\/h2>\n

The governor also took a swipe at Trump\u2019s tumultuous four years in the White House<\/a>, which was often overshadowed by Trump\u2019s personal transgressions and key personnel turnover.<\/p>\n

\u201cI also think just in terms of my approach to leadership, I get personnel in the government who have the agenda of the people and share our agenda<\/a>. You bring your own agenda in, you\u2019re gone,\u201d DeSantis said. \u201cSo, the way we run the Government I think is no daily drama, focus on the big picture and put points on the board and I think that\u2019s something that\u2019s very important.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked about key differences between himself and Trump<\/a>, DeSantis told Morgan he would have handled the COVID-19 pandemic differently, adding he would have fired Anthony Fauci, who was then advising Trump as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.<\/p>\n

No promises on 2024 presidential bid<\/h2>\n

Despite being considered Trump\u2019s top rival for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination<\/a> and just falling slightly behind the former president in recently polling, DeSantis has yet to make any official presidential bid.<\/p>\n

\u201cI haven\u2019t made a final decision on it,\u201d DeSantis said. I\u2019ve told people that I\u2019ve got a lot to do over the next few months in Florida. We\u2019re gonna put a lot of points on the board. And then we\u2019ll see how the dust settles after that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although DeSantis made no promises, he told Morgan that if he were to run, he would be running against President Joe Biden<\/a>, adding that he believes he\u2019d win against him in a general election as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I were to run \u2026 I\u2019m running against Biden,\u201d DeSantis said.<\/p>\n

While DeSantis would be running against Trump for the GOP nomination, he said he would ultimately focus on Biden. \u201cI think he\u2019s failed the country. I think the country wants a change. I think they want a fresh start and a new direction and so we\u2019ll be very vocal about that,” he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump responds: DeSantis ‘desperately trying’ to rescue campaign<\/h2>\n

Trump lashed out at DeSantis’ criticism of him Wednesday afternoon, accusing the Florida governor of \u201cdesperately trying\u201d to revive his campaign despite DeSantis having not yet announced a presidential bid.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile I am fighting against Radical Left Lunatics, Persecutors, and unfair Prosecutors who want to destroy us all, Ron DeSanctimonious is not working for the people of Florida as he should be,\u201d Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. \u201cHe is too busy chatting with a Ratings Challenged TV Host from England, desperately trying to rescue his failing Campaign\u2014But it\u2019s my fault, I put him there!\u201d<\/p>\n

Recent polls have showed Trump slightly widening his lead over DeSantis<\/a>. However, DeSantis is still a highly favorable potentially presidential candidate among Republican and Republican-leaning voters.<\/p>\n
