Former Vice President Mike Pence has said he\u2019ll \u201ctell the truth\u201d and \u201cobey the law\u201d when he appears, as is expected, before a federal grand jury looking into efforts by former President Trump and his allies to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ll \u2013 we\u2019ll obey the law. We\u2019ll tell the truth. And the story that I\u2019ve been telling the American people all across the country, the story that I wrote in the pages of my memoir, that will \u2013 that will be what I tell in that setting as well,\u201d Pence told Robert Costa in an interview<\/a> aired Sunday on CBS\u2019s \u201cFace the Nation.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Pence\u2019s team said earlier this month that the former vice president wouldn\u2019t appeal<\/a> a judge\u2019s order that he testify before the grand jury about Trump\u2019s actions surrounding the 2020 election results, without having to testify about his role in Congress.\u00a0<\/p>\n He\u2019d previously argued<\/a> that his role as then-president of the Senate effectively made him a member of the legislative branch on Jan. 6, 2021, which would mean he was shielded from subpoena by the Constitution\u2019s \u201cspeech and debate\u201d clause. On the day of the riots at the U.S. Capitol, Pence was presiding over a joint session of Congress to certify then-candidate Joe Biden\u2019s 2020 win.\u00a0<\/p>\n Asked in the interview aired Sunday whether he\u2019s set a date with the special counsel for the appearance, Pence said his attorneys have \u201cworked that out\u201d with the Justice Department.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m grateful that the court recognized that there are specific constitutional protections unique to the vice president when you\u2019re serving in your role as president of the Senate,\u201d Pence said on Sunday, adding that \u201cthey\u2019ve limited what they\u2019ll be requesting of me.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Pressed on exactly how those constraints will impact what Pence is able to testify about, the former vice president said he\u2019s limited in what he can say about the proceedings.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cBut people can be confident that we\u2019ll \u2013 we\u2019ll obey the law. We\u2019ll comply with the law,\u201d Pence said.\u00a0<\/p>\n Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith<\/a> is overseeing two separate federal investigations into Trump, one into efforts to overturn the 2020 election and another into Trump\u2019s handling of classified materials.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
