{"id":1262592,"date":"2023-04-29T12:10:49","date_gmt":"2023-04-29T16:10:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/weapons-makers-suffering-worker-shortages-as-ukraine-war-drives-demand\/1262592\/"},"modified":"2023-04-29T12:10:49","modified_gmt":"2023-04-29T16:10:49","slug":"weapons-makers-suffering-worker-shortages-as-ukraine-war-drives-demand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/weapons-makers-suffering-worker-shortages-as-ukraine-war-drives-demand\/1262592\/","title":{"rendered":"Weapons Makers Suffering Worker Shortages As Ukraine War Drives Demand"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ftpimagefix\" style=\"float:left\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/political\/weapons-makers-suffering-worker-shortages-ukraine-war-drives-demand\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100\" alt=\"\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"b8fea211-d5e5-4719-a5af-ad79656a5d8b\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/im-767892.jpg?itok=RvjgZ8IG\"><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Weapons Makers Suffering Worker Shortages As Ukraine War Drives Demand<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>The war in Ukraine is so profitable for defense companies in the US and Europe that <strong>they&#8217;re having trouble finding thousands of skilled workers to satisfy a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/ukraine-war-global-tensions-lift-european-arms-makers-orders-share-prices-40b5ec1f?mod=article_inline\" rel=\"noopener\">record influx<\/a> of orders<\/strong>, according to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/weapons-makers-cant-hire-enough-workers-as-ukraine-war-drives-demand-d1b74bee\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the issue is that <strong>jobs in the defense industry require niche skills and security clearances<\/strong> &#8211; a problem compounded by <strong>a flood of defense companies trying to hire at the same time<\/strong> in an industry which has long struggled to meet recruitment goals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our first priority is really to ramp up capacity, which, of course, means increasing staff,&#8221; according to Patrice Caine, CEO of French component maker Thales, which plans to hire <strong>12,000 people this year<\/strong> to make submarine sensors, jets, and other military items. Caine described the situation as &#8220;tensions on some labor markets,&#8221; which they plan to deal with by <strong>outsourcing to &#8216;foreign engineering centers,&#8217; <\/strong>as well as relying on corporate partners.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, global military spending rose 3.7% to a record $2.24 trillion &#8211; with <strong>European expenditures increasing at its steepest YoY rate in at least 30 years<\/strong>, according to data released Monday by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, a think tank.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>The labor shortage among US defense contractors has been an issue since last year<\/strong>, when efforts to replace workers from pandemic furloughs were accelerated &#8211; and most companies failing to hit their recruitment goals. That said, hiring has improved in recent months according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>In Europe, however, the problem may actually get worse &#8211; with European governments <strong>increasing military spending<\/strong>, causing weapons makers &#8211; particularly munitions manufacturers &#8211; to launch large recruitment drives.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"css-k3zb6l-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><em>Europe\u2019s largest defense company, <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1h1us5y-StyledLink el06won0\" data-type=\"phrase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/market-data\/quotes\/BAESY\" rel=\"noopener\">BAE Systems<\/a> PLC, is hiring 2,600 this year for its apprentice and graduate training programs, and several thousand more for other roles. Missile maker MBDA wants to add 2,000 workers, equivalent to more than 15% of its workforce. Others including <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1h1us5y-StyledLink el06won0\" data-type=\"phrase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/market-data\/quotes\/SAABF\" rel=\"noopener\">Saab AB<\/a>, the Swedish maker of the Gripen jet fighter, and <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1h1us5y-StyledLink el06won0\" data-type=\"phrase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/market-data\/quotes\/XE\/XETR\/RHM\" rel=\"noopener\">Rheinmetall<\/a> AG, the German company that <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1h1us5y-StyledLink el06won0\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/war-in-ukraine-has-supercharged-this-german-weapons-maker-d703ce48?mod=article_inline\" rel=\"noopener\">helps make the Leopard tank<\/a>, also plan to hire thousands of new workers. -WSJ<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"css-k3zb6l-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\" data-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;<strong>Defense companies are worried at the moment about recruitment,<\/strong>&#8221; according to ADS Group Chief Economist, Aimie Stone, citing competition for talent within the industry, along with a revived civil aerospace sector and an emerging space industry. According to Stone, <strong>ADS members had 10,000 job openings at the end of last year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-k3zb6l-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\" data-type=\"paragraph\">UK-based recruiter, Kieran Slaughter, says the defense industry has always posed recruitment challenges, as automakers and airplane manufacturers are competing for the same talent pool, tend to pay more, and don&#8217;t require security clearances &#8211; a process which can take 2-8 weeks in Europe, and several months in the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-k3zb6l-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/im-767893.jpg?itok=692DlZoL\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/im-767893.jpg?itok=692DlZoL\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-k3zb6l-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\" data-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;Some candidates don\u2019t want to wait around,&#8221; said Slaughter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-k3zb6l-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\" data-type=\"paragraph\">What&#8217;s more, <strong>many jobs in the defense industry are highly specialized<\/strong> &#8211; such as warhead engineers &#8211; which Colin McClean, a managing director at BAE Systems, says are a &#8220;rare commodity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-k3zb6l-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\" data-type=\"paragraph\"><strong>US Navy shipbuilder, General Dynamics, <\/strong>was in one of the hardest-hit sectors during the pandemic. In 2022 it hired 24,000 staff &#8211; yet, due to attrition and retirements, its net head count was up only 3,400 to 106,500.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-k3zb6l-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\" data-type=\"paragraph\">Another shipbuilder, Huntington Ingalls Industries, is focusing on recruiting from apprentice schools and community colleges, according to CEO Chris Kastner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-k3zb6l-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\" data-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;If people choose the career, they stay,&#8221; he said. &#8220;There\u2019s the high chance of attrition now with walk-in individuals.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" data-image-external-href=\"\" data-image-href=\"\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/im-767900.jpg?itok=Ah4VokPi\" data-link-option=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/im-767900.jpg?itok=Ah4VokPi\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<figure role=\"group\" class=\"caption caption-img inline-images image-style-inline-images\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"0a119e81-dbcf-499a-9234-e9f5b255ac54\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/im-767900.jpg?itok=Ah4VokPi\" width=\"500\"><figcaption><em>Artillery shells are packed for shipping in Scranton, Pa.
