The purpose of the fund is to invest the organization\u2019s assets to fuel future operations and other important projects.<\/p>\n<p>The world\u2019s largest endowment funds have billions in investable assets, making them sizable players in the finance sector. Here, using data from\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swfinstitute.org\/fund-rankings\/endowment\" rel=\"noopener\">Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute<\/a>, we take a closer look at the world\u2019s largest endowment funds by total assets.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2>Types of Endowment Funds<\/h2>\n<p>Overall, there are\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/corporatefinanceinstitute.com\/resources\/wealth-management\/endowment-fund\/\" rel=\"noopener\">four main types<\/a>\u00a0of endowment structures.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Unrestricted Endowment<\/strong>: A fund structure where assets are used at the full discretion of the institution<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Term Endowment<\/strong>: A fund structure with a fixed term time period before the principal can be spent<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Quasi Endowment<\/strong>: A donation to an endowment with a specific purpose to deploy that capital<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Restricted Endowment<\/strong>: A fund structure where the principal value from donations is held forever and only returns generated on the principal can be used<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, each endowment fund has different structures in regards to withdrawals, use of funds, and their general investment philosophy.<\/p>\n<h2>The Largest Endowment Funds<\/h2>\n<p>The largest endowment funds can be compared on a grand economic scale, in terms of assets.<\/p>\n<p>To put it all into perspective, the largest 50 endowment funds represent over a trillion dollars in assets. Or for a more singular example, look at Harvard\u2019s fund, which has an endowment greater than the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldometers.info\/gdp\/gdp-by-country\/\" The church itself has over 16 million\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Church-of-Jesus-Christ-of-Latter-day-Saints\" rel=\"noopener\">members<\/a>\u00a0worldwide and is the fourth largest church in America.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Japan Science and Technology Agency<\/strong>\u00a0(<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jst.go.jp\/EN\/about\/overview.html\" rel=\"noopener\">JST<\/a>) is a national research and development agency that plays a core role in promoting technology, innovation, and science within society. In 1995, Japan\u2019s government passed the Science and Technology Basic Plan and the JST came to life and now has over\u00a0<strong>$80 billion<\/strong>\u00a0in assets as well as offices in Paris, Washington, Singapore, and Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>Just two funds come from the Middle East. The\u00a0<strong>King Abdullah University of Science and Technology<\/strong>\u00a0(KAUST) with\u00a0<strong>$23.5 billion<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<strong>General Authority of Awqaf<\/strong>. KAUST is ranked\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/education\/best-global-universities\/king-abdullah-university-of-science-technology-510489\" rel=\"noopener\">95th<\/a>\u00a0amongst universities in the world and made history in the country by being Saudi Arabia\u2019s first\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kaust.edu.sa\/en\/about\/gbc\/quick-facts\" rel=\"noopener\">mixed-gender<\/a>\u00a0university.<\/p>\n<p>The General Authority of Awqaf has\u00a0<strong>$11 billion<\/strong>\u00a0in assets and was\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.awqaf.gov.sa\/en\/about-authority\" rel=\"noopener\">established<\/a>\u00a0as a public authority to manage endowments and enhance Saudi Arabia\u2019s various goals for societal development. \u201cAwqaf\u201d in Arabic loosely translates to assets that are donated or purchased for general or specific charitable causes that are socially beneficial.<\/p>\n<p>On the environmental side is the\u00a0<strong>Nature Conservancy<\/strong>, which has\u00a0<strong>$7.8 billion<\/strong>\u00a0in assets. The charity is estimated to have protected more than\u00a0<strong>100 million acres<\/strong>\u00a0of land.<\/p>\n<h2>American Universities Dominate<\/h2>\n<p>Universities are one leading category from the world of endowment funds, particularly those from the United States. In fact, universities make up 39 of the top 50 endowment funds, with 35 of them based in America.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, Harvard has been the largest, but Stanford has edged ahead in recent years. Stanford has\u00a0<strong>$75 billion<\/strong>\u00a0in assets compared to Harvard\u2019s\u00a0<strong>$73 billion<\/strong>. These vast amounts of money have not gone unnoticed, and elite universities are facing mounting criticism in some circles.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cWhen Harvard\u2019s total admitted freshman class is 1,400 people\u2014and they have an endowment that is the GDP of El Salvador\u2014they\u2019re not a nonprofit, they\u2019re a hedge fund educating the children of their investors.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><cite>\u2013 PROFESSOR SCOTT GALLOWAY<\/cite><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>With\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/how-much-student-debt-does-each-state-hold\/\" rel=\"noopener\">student debt<\/a>\u00a0rising to\u00a0<strong>$1.6 trillion<\/strong>, it\u2019s likely these universities may face greater criticism around how they use the wealth available to them in endowment funds.<\/p>\n<h2>Sizable Influence<\/h2>\n<p>The top endowment funds carry considerable influence within the world of finance.
