“It’s Sad” – Jeff Gundlach Laments Former Bond King’s Bellicose Rant<\/span><\/p>\n

We warned yesterday <\/a>that Jeff Gundlach wouldn’t take Bill Gross’ bitching – about who the real ‘Bond King’ is – lying down.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

But he played his cards well – reflecting of tone of sadness for the grumpy old man clinging to his past successes.<\/p>\n

Gross criticized Gundlach yesterday on a Bloomberg podcast, saying he wasn\u2019t anywhere near being crowned a \u201cbond king.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gundlach responded calmly to questions about the remarks as part of a panel at the Future Proof conference for the wealth management industry in Huntington Beach, California:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s sad for somebody that\u2019s been out of the business for 10 years and is still trying to exorcise the demons,\u201d <\/strong>adding, in a wonderfully patronizing manner:<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cBut I hope he\u2019s doing fine.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Gross had mocked Gundlach’s firm having ‘only $55 billion AUM’ – not enough to be a ‘king’. Gundlach remarked that: \u201cI never wanted that title, I never embraced it, I really don\u2019t know what it means.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re doing great, our five-year numbers are great, things are good. <\/strong>And we manage a lot more than $55 billion,” <\/em>he added, noting that he doesn\u2019t want to manage more money than he already does, citing roughly $100 billion assets under management for his firm.<\/p>\n

He also pointed out that he stopped marketing his largest fund more than a decade ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis idea that your AUM defines you, it\u2019s just weird. <\/strong>I\u2019ve capped many of my strategies that I could have raised twice, three times as much money but I didn\u2019t think there\u2019d be fun, I didn\u2019t think I\u2019d be happier doing that,\u201d Gundlach said. <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI actually thought it would be more difficult. Because along with that is more clients, more hassles and probably incrementally less rewarding <\/strong>because you\u2019re less successful in terms of results.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The DoubleLine CEO took the high-road with his concluding remarks:<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope he retires and feels better about himself,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> Gundlach said of Gross.<\/p>\n

How long before Gross buys a house near Gundlach and starts playing his music at max volume?<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
