{"id":1428531,"date":"2023-09-20T20:01:00","date_gmt":"2023-09-21T00:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1428531"},"modified":"2023-09-20T20:01:00","modified_gmt":"2023-09-21T00:01:00","slug":"stocks-bonds-slammed-as-powell-pies-in-next-years-punchbowl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/stocks-bonds-slammed-as-powell-pies-in-next-years-punchbowl\/1428531\/","title":{"rendered":"Stocks &amp; Bonds Slammed As Powell Pi$$es In Next Year&#8217;s Punchbowl"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Stocks &amp; Bonds Slammed As Powell Pi$$es In Next Year&#8217;s Punchbowl<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/markets\/fomc-9\">If you&#8217;re not confused now, you weren&#8217;t paying attention.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Fed held rates unchanged (as expected) &#8211; neutral.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Fed increased its growth expectation, lowered its unemployment expectation, and increased its inflation outlook &#8211; dovish\/soft-landing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Fed erased 50bps of cuts expected for next year in its dot-plot &#8211; hawkish as hell.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That sent STIRs hawkishly higher&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/bfm9BC6.jpg?itok=c9LCwU_I\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Bloomberg<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elerianm\/status\/1704571957134360817?s=20\">Mohamed El-Erian offered the most succinct summary<\/a> of the malaise many were left in after the statement, the SEP, and the press conference:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I worry that<strong> the economic and policy signals coming out of this Federal Reserve<\/strong> press conference may come across to many as <strong>both confused and confusing.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Some will deem this an inevitable consequence of this phase of the inflation and policy cycle; <strong>others will view it as further evidence of challenged Fed communication<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And the Dot-Plot crushed expectations for cuts next year&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/bfm379D.jpg?itok=VQ24KT1T\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Bloomberg<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Treasuries were mixed on the day &#8211; and very volatile &#8211; with the short-end dramatically underperforming. 2Y ended up 6bps while 30Y was down 3bps on the day. On the week, the long-end is lower but the short-end is significantly higher&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/bfm4FC1_0.jpg?itok=ZSI6BVB2\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Bloomberg<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The pattern was similar for all bonds (except the 30Y) with early gains (erasing yesterday&#8217;s losses) quickly being eviscerated on the Fed&#8217;s SEP.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/bfmFC58.jpg?itok=r8X8hdiL\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Bloomberg<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>10Y yield broke out from the August highs late in the day to their highest since Oct 2007&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/bfm4E25.jpg?itok=CCUHTs4x\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Bloomberg<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>And 2Y yields soared to a new high since July 2006 (2y yields rose 14bps off the intraday lows this afternoon)&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/bfm494E.jpg?itok=Zf5IgtV0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Bloomberg<\/em><\/p>\n<p>All of which crushed the yield curve (2s30s)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/bfm404.jpg?itok=s1-RO44m\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Bloomberg<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Equities did what equities do around the FOMC.
