{"id":1428710,"date":"2023-09-22T03:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-09-22T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1428710"},"modified":"2023-09-22T03:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-09-22T07:00:00","slug":"us-wants-saudi-defense-pact-modeled-after-south-korea-japan-deals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/us-wants-saudi-defense-pact-modeled-after-south-korea-japan-deals\/1428710\/","title":{"rendered":"US Wants Saudi Defense Pact Modeled After South Korea, Japan Deals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">US Wants Saudi Defense Pact Modeled After South Korea, Japan Deals<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/new.thecradle.co\/articles\/us-wants-saudi-defense-pact-modeled-after-south-korea-japan-deals-report\"><em>Via The Cradle,<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>US and Saudi officials are advancing talks for a <strong>&#8220;mutual defense treaty&#8221;<\/strong> that would <strong>resemble broad agreements Washington maintains with Japan and South Korea<\/strong>, according to officials who spoke with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/09\/19\/us\/politics\/biden-saudi-defense-treaty.html\">New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Under such an agreement, the United States and Saudi Arabia would generally <strong>pledge to provide military support if the other country is attacked<\/strong> in the region or on Saudi territory,&#8221; the NYT report reads.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/saudimil.jpg?itok=6S65JhtH\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The security pact is part of a so-called <strong>&#8220;megadeal&#8221;<\/strong> that would be sealed between Washington and Riyadh in exchange for the kingdom <strong>normalizing ties with Israel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS) \u2026 regards a mutual defense agreement with the United States as the most important element in his talks with the Biden administration about Israel,&#8221; the NYT cites US officials as saying.<\/p>\n<p>The NYT report was published the same day US President Joe Biden\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/biden-israel-normalization-delivering-results-amid-tireless-2-state-solution-push\/\">extolled\u00a0<\/a>the benefits of normalization with Israel during his speech at the UN General Assembly (UNGA).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Israel\u2019s greater normalization and economic connection with its neighbors delivering positive and practical impacts even as we continue to work tirelessly for just and lasting peace, for Israelis and Palestinians, <strong>two states for two peoples<\/strong>,&#8221; Biden said.<\/p>\n<p>His talk of a two-state solution echoed comments from Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on Monday when he stressed that the only solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict is an &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/new.thecradle.co\/articles\/independent-palestine-only-solution-to-arab-israel-conflict-saudi-fm\">independent Palestine<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The solution to the Palestinian issue must be based on the two-state solution and the establishment of the Palestinian state in accordance with international resolutions. <strong>We seek to bring the conversation about the two-state solution back to the forefront<\/strong>,&#8221; the kingdom&#8217;s top diplomat told reporters on the sidelines of the 78th UNGA session in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Saudi media\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/elaph.com\/Web\/News\/2023\/09\/1515600.html\">reported\u00a0<\/a>that the kingdom had allegedly ended talks of normalizing ties with Israel over inflammatory comments from Jewish-supremacist ministers within the Israeli government who vehemently oppose making concessions to the Palestinians. One day later, however, US and Israeli officials called the report \u201cfalse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If approved by two-thirds of the US Congress, \u00a0the security pact would be a reversal from a 2021 move by the US to remove Patriot missile batteries from the kingdom as it prepared to incite an armed conflict with Russia and China.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, according to a White House letter sent to Congress in June, the US has <strong>about 2,700 troops stationed in Saudi Arabia<\/strong>.
