{"id":1431554,"date":"2023-10-09T03:40:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-09T07:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1431554"},"modified":"2023-10-09T03:40:00","modified_gmt":"2023-10-09T07:40:00","slug":"can-you-be-extradited-for-treason-former-army-soldier-arrested-over-attempted-china-espionage-involving-classified-materials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/can-you-be-extradited-for-treason-former-army-soldier-arrested-over-attempted-china-espionage-involving-classified-materials\/1431554\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Can You Be Extradited For Treason?&#8221;: Former Army Soldier Arrested Over Attempted China Espionage Involving Classified Materials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">&#8220;Can You Be Extradited For Treason?&#8221;: Former Army Soldier Arrested Over Attempted China Espionage Involving Classified Materials<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>A former US Army soldier has been arrested and charged with <strong>two felonies<\/strong> over alleged attempts to deliver national defense information to the Chinese Communist Party, as well as illegal retention of national defense information following his exit from the service.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/rebecca-hendin-bbc-news-chinese-espionage-illustration-1-1920-mr.jpg?itok=baVfGSGA\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Joseph Schmidt, a former Sergeant, was arrested at San Francisco International Airport on Friday after a grand jury indicted him on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Schmidt, who served as a team leader of an Army human intelligence squad <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/04\/03\/chinese-spy-balloon-gathered-intelligence-from-us-military-sites\/\">supporting US espionage<\/a> in the Indo-Pacific, is accused of <strong>attempting to spy for China<\/strong> following his departure from the service in February 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;shocking&#8221; plot includes allegations that <strong>Schmidt&#8217;s search history includes &#8220;can you be extradited for treason?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>During a trip to Istanbul the same month he left the military, <strong>Schmidt made nearly 30 Google searches related to defection and spilling military secrets<\/strong>, ranging from \u201ccountries with most negative relations with US\u201d to \u201cwhat is China\u2019s intelligence agency?\u201d and \u201csoldier defect,\u201d according to an FBI investigative report.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Other search terms included \u201csubreddit spying\u201d and \u201clooking for a subreddit about spy stuff.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Schmidt also queried Google Maps for driving directions from Beijing\u2019s airport to the headquarters of China\u2019s Ministry of State Security, which has a similar role to the CIA.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>On Feb. 24, 2020, Schmidt sent a message to the Chinese Consulate in Istanbul requesting a meeting, <\/strong>calling himself a United States citizen looking to move to China.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI also am trying to share information I learned during my career as an interrogator with the Chinese government,\u201d he wrote. &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/10\/06\/ex-us-soldier-sgt-joseph-schmidt-accused-of-spying-for-china-searched-can-you-be-extradited-for-treason-feds\/\">NY Post<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have a current top-secret clearance, and would like to talk to someone from the Government to share this information with you if that is possible,&#8221; Schmidt wrote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Individuals entrusted with national defense information have a continuing duty to protect that information beyond their government service and certainly beyond our borders,&#8221; said Assistant Attorney General for National Security Matthew Olsen in a prepared statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The National Security Division is committed to identifying and holding accountable those who violate that duty.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>More via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/former-us-soldier-arrested-for-trying-to-give-china-access-to-military-computer-systems-5505510?ea_src=frontpage&amp;ea_med=special-coverage-national-security-0\"><em>The Epoch Times<\/em><\/a>;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mr. Schmidt served in the Army for five years, ending his service in 2020.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>His primary active-duty assignment was at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state, where he served in the 109th Military Intelligence Battalion<strong>. He was given access to Secret and Top Secret information in his role there.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After separating from the military, Mr. Schmidt is alleged to have illegally held onto classified intelligence about national defense matters that he had obtained as part of his duties. Mr. Schmidt then allegedly reached out to the Chinese consulate in Turkey and then through email to Chinese security services and offered the information to the regime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>As alleged by the government, Schmidt betrayed his promise and potentially placed our nation at risk in his attempts to pass national defense information to Chinese security services<\/strong>,\u201d said FBI Assistant Director of Counterintelligence Suzanne Turner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe FBI and our partners remain steadfast in our commitment to protecting the American people and U.S. national security.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Two months after Mr. Schmidt\u2019s separation from the Army, he traveled to Hong Kong where he allegedly told Chinese security services that he had access to a device that could access the United States\u2019 secure military computer networks.
