California Governor Wants To Spend $640,000 Each For 10,000 Mental Health Beds<\/span><\/p>\n

Newsom Campaigns for Mental Health Proposition<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Cal Matters reports\u00a0Newsom Kicks Off Campaign for Mental Health Prop<\/a><\/p>\n

California voters will\u00a0decide only one measure<\/a>\u00a0in the March 5 primary \u2014 and that\u2019s exactly what Gov. Gavin Newsom wanted. He championed bills to\u00a0<\/strong>borrow $6.4 billion to pay for<\/a>\u00a010,000 new mental health treatment beds<\/em>\u00a0and to overhaul California\u2019s 20-year-old law that funds\u00a0mental health services with a tax on millionaires<\/a>. They will be combined into one proposition \u2014 Prop. 1.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Legislature cooperated by clearing the March ballot of\u00a0potentially competing bond measures for schools, colleges and housing<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 and of three constitutional amendments, which were\u00a0put off until the Nov. 5 general election<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And Thursday, Newsom officially\u00a0launched his campaign for the ballot measure<\/a>, with the slogan\u00a0\u201cTreatment not Tents<\/em>\u201d \u2014 a nod to both public concern about homelessness and his efforts to clear encampments. Politico reports that he\u2019s putting $6 million into the campaign to start.<\/p>\n

Treatment Not Tents<\/strong><\/h2>\n

$6.4 billion for 10,000 beds is $640,000 per bed.<\/p>\n

California has 161,548 homeless, most of which have mental health issues.<\/p>\n

The total bill tor\u00a0Treatments Not Tents<\/em>\u00a0would be 161,548 * $640,000 = $103,390,720,000 ($103.4 billion).<\/p>\n

The governor says 10,000 beds will serve 100,000 homeless. No, it won\u2019t unless you put 10 people in one bed and keep them there.<\/p>\n

Otherwise, it will be an endless cycle of people in and out of bed making the total off the street no more than 10,000 at a cost of $640,000 each.<\/p>\n

There are about 6,000 existing beds now, and that has not made any dent in 161,000 homeless.<\/p>\n

Leave California Now<\/strong><\/h2>\n

To make way for the idiotic Proposition 1, the legislature postponed three other idiocies on schools, housing, and colleges. It\u2019s a temporary reprieve. California will be after still more of your money in November of 2024.<\/p>\n

And when adding 10,000 beds does nothing, California will seek another $6.4 billion for more beds.<\/p>\n
