Number Of Kids Put On Puberty Blockers Doubles Despite NHS Promising To Stop<\/span><\/p>\n

The number of children placed on puberty blockers for \u2018gender affirming care\u2019 has doubled in the UK in a year despite the government run National Health Service saying it would stop the practice outside of clinical trials.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Telegraph\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0that at least 100 children, some as young as 12, have been given the drugs since July 2022 regardless of the NHS\u2019 decision that month to stop doing so based on a damning review by\u00a0Dr Hilary Cass<\/strong>, former president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.<\/p>\n

Dr Cass\u00a0warned that puberty blockers could permanently disrupt the brain development of adolescents, and irreversibly rewire neural circuits.<\/p>\n

Cass also charged that\u00a0Tavistock clinic, where the \u2018treatment\u2019 is carried out, operates an \u201caffirmative, non-exploratory approach\u201d, diagnosing children with gender dysphoria without proper oversight.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

NHS England agreed with Cass\u2019 findings and announced that\u00a0\u201cdue to the significant uncertainties surrounding the use of hormone treatments\u201d puberty blockers for children would be halted.<\/p>\n

The report notes that Freedom of Information requests for\u00a0referrals from the Tavistock\u2019s Gender Identity Development Service\u00a0have revealed that hasn\u2019t happened.<\/p>\n

The figures also do not include those given the drugs by GPs or privately, and are likely to be much higher.<\/p>\n

Commenting on the findings, Psychotherapist Stella O\u2019Malley charged that \u201cThis demonstrates that the culture war is more important than the medical war.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Meanwhile the 16-17 year olds are just referred straight to the adult clinic:<\/p>\n

“As many as 2,000 teens aged 16 and 17 have been told they will be sent straight to an adult clinic as delays and backlogs mean they won\u2019t be seen by a children\u2019s service before they turn 18.”<\/p>\n

Consultant psychiatrist Dr David Bell commented that the drugs cause \u201cconsiderable damage,\u201d adding \u201cThere are serious concerns about bone mineralisation and long-term cognitive effects.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know\u00a098 per cent of children starting puberty blockers\u00a0go on to take opposite-sex hormones, and a very significant proportion of those go on to have surgery,\u201d he continued, adding \u201cThey are being started on a pathway which is highly likely to be irreversible. Once you start them on that path, it creates a self-fulfilling prophecy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bell also noted that \u201cautism, depression, family trauma or sexuality\u201d are not considered as factors which goes \u201ccompletely against the Cass recommendations\u201d.<\/p>\n

Stephanie Davies-Arai, director of Transgender Trend, which campaigns for evidence-based healthcare, said \u201cHow many more children will be given blockers before they stop?\u201d adding\u00a0\u201cI don\u2019t understand how the NHS can sit back and let this continue when they know the harms that were described in Dr Cass\u2019 interim report.\u201d<\/p>\n
