Also called Edwards&#8217; syndrome, the condition causes a variety of abnormalities, affecting the skull, heart and other organs. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/baby\/what-is-trisomy-18\">Of those who make it to birth, less than 10% survive a year<\/a>, and frequently have major intellectual impairments.\u00a0Cox&#8217;s lawyers say she&#8217;s had to make four emergency room visits to address pain and discharge.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;It is not a matter of if I will have to say goodbye to my baby, but when,&#8221;<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-67653936\">said<\/a> Cox in a statement. &#8220;I&#8217;m trying to do what is best for my baby and myself, but the state of Texas is making us both suffer.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/1QPgkvdV.jpg?itok=EEfwgtc9\"><strong>In Thursday&#8217;s hearing conducted via video, Kate Cox weeps as the judge grants her an exemption to Texas abortion law\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Her lawyers argued that an abortion is needed to protect Cox &#8212; who&#8217;s had two prior C-sections &#8212; from a dangerous birth that could damage her fertility.<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cContinuing the pregnancy puts her at high risk for severe complications threatening her life and future fertility, including uterine rupture and hysterectomy,\u201d they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/12\/07\/us\/texas-abortion-ruling\/index.html\">said<\/a> in filing the suit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea that Ms. Cox wants desperately to be pregnant, and this law might actually cause her to lose that ability, is shocking, and would be a genuine miscarriage of justice,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/12\/07\/us\/texas-abortion-ruling\/index.html\">said<\/a> Judge Maya Guerra Gamble as she ruled in Cox&#8217;s favor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of the Supreme Court ruling that overturned <em>Roe v Wade<\/em> and rightfully returned abortion governance to the individual states, many conservative state legislatures raced to impose restrictions. <strong>Texas has banned nearly all abortions<\/strong>,<strong> <\/strong>with exceptions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2023\/10\/11\/texas-abortion-law-birth-control-what-you-need-to-know\/\">limited<\/a> to situations where it&#8217;s needed to save the mother&#8217;s life or safeguard her from\u00a0\u201csubstantial impairment of major bodily function.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton doubled down on enforcing the law,<\/strong>\u00a0immediately firing off <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TXAG\/status\/1732849903154450622?s=20\">a letter<\/a> to three Houston hospitals warning that the judge&#8217;s order would &#8220;not insulate hospitals, doctors, or anyone else, from civil and criminal liability for violating Texas\u2019 abortion laws.&#8221; The hospitals are the ones where a doctor who has committed to performing the abortion for Cox has admitting privileges.<\/p>\n<p>To read the letter, see below. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tCZMSDGqMB\">pic.twitter.com\/tCZMSDGqMB<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Texas Attorney General (@TXAG) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TXAG\/status\/1732849903154450622?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 7, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The letter also spelled out Paxton&#8217;s reasoning for concluding that the restraining order was wrongly granted. His office, which may appeal the ruling to a higher court, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasattorneygeneral.gov\/news\/releases\/attorney-general-ken-paxton-responds-travis-county-tro\">warned<\/a> the hospitals that the temporary restraining order &#8220;will expire long before the statute of limitations<\/strong> for violating Texas&#8217; abortion laws expires.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Doctors performing illegal abortions in Texas face sentences of up to life in prison<\/strong>, and the law also requires the state attorney general to pursue a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2022\/08\/25\/texas-trigger-law-abortion\/#:~:text=Performing%20an%20abortion%20is%20now,its%20judgment%20in%20Dobbs%20v.\">civil penalty of at least $100,000<\/a>.
