{"id":1444492,"date":"2023-12-18T09:15:00","date_gmt":"2023-12-18T14:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1444492"},"modified":"2023-12-18T09:15:00","modified_gmt":"2023-12-18T14:15:00","slug":"visualizing-americas-one-sided-love-of-european-wine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/visualizing-americas-one-sided-love-of-european-wine\/1444492\/","title":{"rendered":"Visualizing America&#8217;s One-Sided Love Of European Wine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Visualizing America&#8217;s One-Sided Love Of European Wine<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p><strong>When the United States and the European Union\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-and-eu-near-deal-on-boeing-airbus-trade-fight-11623747870\">finally buried the hatchet<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>in a long-simmering dispute over government subsidies to Boeing and Airbus in June 2021, <strong>wine lovers in the U.S. may well have opened a bottle of Bordeaux to celebrate. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While that may sound strange, after all what does wine have to do with airline subsidies, it actually makes perfect sense.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wine was one of the products caught in the middle of a tit-for-tat tariff fight that saw the Trump administration put a 25-percent levy on certain European food and drink items,<\/strong> including wines from Germany, Spain, France and the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Those tariffs were suspended half a year later in a broader bid to improve transatlantic relations which had cooled notably during Trump\u2019s time in office.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/16126\/wine-trade-between-the-us-and-europe\/\">As Statista&#8217;s Felix Richter shows in the following chart<\/a>, <strong>America\u2019s love of wines from Southern Europe, with France and Italy especially coming to mind, is a one-sided affair. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/16126\/wine-trade-between-the-us-and-europe\/\" title=\"Infographic: America's One-Sided Love of European Wine | Statista\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>You will find more infographics at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chartoftheday\/\">Statista<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/agridata.ec.europa.eu\/extensions\/DashboardWine\/WineTrade.html\">Eurostat<\/a>\u00a0data, the <strong>U.S. imported more than 5 million hectoliters from France and Italy<\/strong> between August 1, 2022 and July 31, 2023 &#8211; worth roughly $4.5 billion.<\/p>\n<p>While Italy was by far the biggest exporter to the U.S. in terms of volume, France is leading in monetary terms thanks to its more pricey grapes.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <strong>Europe&#8217;s five largest wine producers imported little more than 300,000 hectoliters of wine from the U.S.<\/strong>, choosing instead to get high on their own supply, to borrow a quote from the movie Scarface.<\/p>\n<p>Germany is the notable example among Europe&#8217;s major wine producers, as it is the only country among the top 5 to import more\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/topics\/1541\/wine-market\/\">wine from the U.S.<\/a>\u00a0than it ships back across the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>      <span class=\"field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden\"><a title=\"View user profile.\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/users\/tyler-durden\" class=\"username\">Tyler Durden<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden\">Mon, 12\/18\/2023 &#8211;
