US President Joe Biden\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0reporters on 23 December that he did not ask for a ceasefire during his latest call with Israel\u2019s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had a long talk with Netanyahu today, and it was a private conversation,\u201d <\/strong>the president said, adding that he \u201cdid not ask for a ceasefire.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The White House said Biden and Netanyahu discussed the Israeli war on Gaza and its \u201cobjectives and phasing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The US president \u201cemphasized the critical need to protect the civilian population, including those supporting the humanitarian aid operation<\/strong>, and the importance of allowing civilians to move safely away from areas of ongoing fighting,\u201d <\/em>according to the White House statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Biden’s phone call came one day after the UN Security Council passed a barebones resolution that called for increased humanitarian aid but failed to demand an immediate ceasefire.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Security Council had been trying to draft a\u00a0resolution<\/a>\u00a0for several days but was forced to tone down the language at the insistence of US officials who opposed a call for an \u201curgent and sustainable cessation of hostilities.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The US and Russia abstained from the UNSC vote.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Washington has vetoed two previous resolutions calling for a ceasefire.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis resolution has been watered down to the point that its impact on the lives of civilians in Gaza will be nearly meaningless,\u201d <\/strong>said Avril Benoit of Doctors Without Borders.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

On Saturday, Israel\u2019s Broadcasting Authority revealed Tel Aviv is planning to switch to a\u00a0new phase<\/a>\u00a0of the war in the coming weeks, bringing to an end to ground operations and shifting the focus to continued heavy airstrikes on the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n

While Washington has been calling for a switch to lower-intensity operations to \u201cprotect civilians,\u201d maintaining air raids of Gaza is expected to keep the staggering death toll on the rise.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Young voters in the US have increasingly shown support for the\u00a0Palestinian cause<\/a>, plunging Biden\u2019s approval ratings. A\u00a0poll<\/a>\u00a0earlier this month showed that 53 percent of US citizens \u201cdisapprove of the president.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
