{"id":1449904,"date":"2024-01-10T15:38:41","date_gmt":"2024-01-10T20:38:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1449904"},"modified":"2024-01-10T15:38:41","modified_gmt":"2024-01-10T20:38:41","slug":"wti-slides-after-unexpected-crude-build-cushing-stocks-decline-for-first-time-since-oct","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/wti-slides-after-unexpected-crude-build-cushing-stocks-decline-for-first-time-since-oct\/1449904\/","title":{"rendered":"WTI Slides After Unexpected Crude Build, Cushing Stocks Decline For First Time Since Oct."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">WTI Slides After Unexpected Crude Build, Cushing Stocks Decline For First Time Since Oct.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>Oil prices extended their recent gains, as traders <strong>weighed escalating violence in the Red Sea and tighter US inventories<\/strong> (following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/energy\/wti-holds-gains-after-api-reports-big-crude-draw-product-builds\">last night&#8217;s API report showing a big crude draw, but product builds)<\/a> against a <strong>fragile market demand backdrop<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As Bloomberg notes, crude has seesawed in a roughly $5 range for the past month as traders attempt to gauge the outlook for coming quarters.<\/p>\n<p>Turmoil in the Middle East, a shutdown of Libya\u2019s biggest oil field and production cuts by\u00a0OPEC+\u00a0are buttressing prices, while demand forecasts such as Vitol\u2019s are tempering them.<\/p>\n<p>But any signs of tightness in the official inventory and production data could extend the current trend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>API<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Crude -5.125mm (-600k exp)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cushing -625k<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gasoline +4.896mm (+2.1mm exp)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Distillates +6.873mm (+1.00mm exp)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>DOE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Crude +1.2338mm (-600k exp)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cushing -506k &#8211; first draw since Oct &#8217;23<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gasoline\u00a0 (+2.1mm exp)<\/p>\n<p>Distillates\u00a0 (+1.00mm exp)<\/p>\n<p>In a big shift from API&#8217;s sizable crude draw, the official (adjusted) DOE data showed an unexpected 1.34mm barrel build in crude stocks. Cushing stocks did decline for the first time since October. And for the second week in a row, product builds were huge&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/bfm287A.jpg?itok=qrTAzVjD\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Bloomberg<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Biden admin added 606k barrels to the SPR last week (the 4th weekly addition in a row)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/bfmDC41.jpg?itok=Mii2YF3y\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Bloomberg<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Cushing stocks rolled over from their highest level since July 2023..<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/bfm77BD.jpg?itok=ogf6ivFW\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Bloomberg<\/em><\/p>\n<p>US Crude production was flat, just off record highs&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/bfmB483.jpg?itok=up2mqDt4\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Bloomberg<\/em><\/p>\n<p>WTI was hovering just above $73 ahead of the official print, and slid lower on the unexpected build&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2024-01-10_07-31-33.jpg?itok=-p1uH999\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the bright side (for oil bulls), the US benchmark\u2019s\u00a0<strong>prompt <\/strong>spread, a critical barometer for supply and demand, <strong>has flipped to a bullish structure known as backwardation for the first time since November&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/bfm6F7F_0.jpg?itok=JCrlNZx8\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the\u00a0options market, some traders are betting that the worst of oil\u2019s early-year malaise may be over, with<strong> contracts that would profit from a rally above $110 in June futures changing hands in large volumes yesterday<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/bfm1DA4.jpg?itok=fUWEIPmY\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, the EIA said in its monthly report that it expects, <strong>global oil demand will exceed supply by 120,000 barrels a day in 2024 <\/strong>as output cuts by OPEC+ tighten the market.
