{"id":1450094,"date":"2024-01-11T13:42:05","date_gmt":"2024-01-11T18:42:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1450094"},"modified":"2024-01-11T13:42:05","modified_gmt":"2024-01-11T18:42:05","slug":"headline-cpi-hotter-than-expected-in-december-food-costs-hit-record-high","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/headline-cpi-hotter-than-expected-in-december-food-costs-hit-record-high\/1450094\/","title":{"rendered":"Headline CPI Hotter Than Expected In December, Food Costs Hit Record High"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Headline CPI Hotter Than Expected In December, Food Costs Hit Record High<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p><strong>Headline Consumer Price Inflation printed hotter than expected in December,<\/strong> +0.3% MoM vs +0.2% exp and +0.1% prior, pushing the YoY headline CPI up to +3.4% (from +3.1% prior and hotter than the +3.2% exp)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/bfm5870.jpg?itok=0-jCBFSo\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Bloomberg<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Services (Shelter mostly) costs re-accelerated and energy deflation stalled in December&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/image%20%286%29_9.png?itok=buXoFiQ1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the brighter side,<strong> core CPI <\/strong>rose 0.3% MoM as expected, dropping the YoY change <strong>below 4.00% (3.93%) for the first time since May 2021&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/bfmD7C9.jpg?itok=kIrEUrSK\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Bloomberg<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Goods deflation has stalled as the <strong>used cars and trucks index rose 0.5 percent over the month, after rising 1.6 percent in November.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/image%20%285%29_10.png?itok=vHIiwLg0\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>More problematically for The Fed (and the rate-cut &#8216;hypers&#8217;), is the fact that Core CPI Services Ex-Shelter <strong>(SuperCore) rose 0.4% MoM, upticking the YoY rise to +4.09%&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/bfm9EC.jpg?itok=h9qnEZ4-\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Bloomberg<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>This is a category that Fed Chair Jerome Powell and other policymakers have highlighted as a focus.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All the subsectors of SuperCore rose MoM with <strong>the shelter index increased 6.2 percent over the last year, accounting for over two thirds of the total increase in the all items less food and energy index.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/image%20%288%29_5.png?itok=U1YDVi1g\"><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>But shelter inflation is slowing (slowly):<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shelter inflation <\/strong>was up 6.15% YoY in Dec, down from 6.51% in Nov and the<strong> lowest since July 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rent inflation <\/strong>was up 6.47% YoY in Dec, down from 6.87% in Nov and the<strong> lowest since July 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/image%20%289%29_5.png?itok=2pDLTMSf\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And the next time someone from the Biden administration says &#8216;inflation is down&#8217; in an attempt to gaslight the public into believing &#8216;prices are down&#8217; &#8211; show them this chart&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Headline costs at record highs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Core costs are record highs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Food costs at record highs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fuel costs on the rise again<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/bfmC69F.jpg?itok=Jyu5oXBY\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Bloomberg<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Four of the six major grocery store food group indexes increased over the month.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The index for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs rose 0.5 percent in December, led by an 8.9-percent increase in the index for eggs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The index for food away from home rose 5.2 percent over the last year. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The index for limited service meals rose 5.9 percent over the last 12 months, and the index for full service meals rose 4.5 percent over the same period.<\/p>\n<p>Is this a pause before the re-plunge?
