Alzheimer&#8217;s Paper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Former Stanford President Retracts &#8220;Ground-Breaking&#8221; Alzheimer&#8217;s Paper<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/former-stanford-president-retracts-groundbreaking-alzheimers-paper\/\"><em>Authored by Maggie Kelly via The College Fix,<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Former Stanford University President Marc Tessier-Lavigne, who resigned in July of last year after an investigation found flaws in his research, retracted a 2009 science paper formerly described as \u201cgroundbreaking.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The prestigious science journal<em>\u00a0Nature\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-023-06943-3\">announced<\/a>\u00a0the retraction in a December 18 article signed by Tessier-Lavigne (<em>pictured<\/em> below), the lead author, and his three co-authors,<em>\u00a0The Stanford Daily<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stanforddaily.com\/2023\/12\/31\/blockbuster-alzheimers-paper-retracted-by-former-stanford-president-after-a-decade-of-resistance\/\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, Tessier-Lavigne, a neuroscientist, was <strong>an executive at the biotechnology company Genentech<\/strong>, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stanforddaily.com\/2023\/02\/17\/internal-review-found-falsified-data-in-stanford-presidents-alzheimers-research-colleagues-allege\/\"><em>The Daily<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Two days after the paper\u2019s publication, <strong>Genentech described it to its shareholders as \u201cgroundbreaking basic research about an entirely new way of looking at the cause of Alzheimer\u2019s disease.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2024-01-11_08-10-44.jpg?itok=Mw9-67og\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>A\u00a0<em>Nature<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/459310a\">article<\/a>\u00a0published about the paper shortly after was titled, \u201cAlzheimer\u2019s theory makes a splash.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tessier-Lavigne told\u00a0<em>The Daily, \u201c<\/em>As with all of my papers, at the time of publication of<em>\u00a0Nature<\/em>\u00a02009, I believed the results in the paper were correct and accurately presented.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cI absolutely believe that there are no falsified data in the paper,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> he told\u00a0<em>The Daily<\/em>\u00a0in a subsequent email, it reported.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2024-01-11_08-08-02.jpg?itok=r3UWvaLy\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The retraction is Tessier-Lavigne\u2019s fourth in four months,<\/strong> according to\u00a0<em>The Daily.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Such incidents are rare, as just eight out of every 10,000 science papers are retracted, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/retractionwatch.com\/2022\/12\/27\/nearing-5000-retractions-a-review-of-2022\/\">Retraction Watch<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily<\/em>\u00a0reported that \u201ctwo of Tessier-Lavigne\u2019s influential neurodevelopment papers published in\u00a0<em>Science<\/em>\u00a0and a third published in<em>\u00a0Cell<\/em>\u00a0were <strong>withdrawn earlier this fall after they were found to contain manipulated images.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAnother Tessier-Lavigne paper published in\u00a0Nature\u00a0was issued an expression of concern over \u2018manipulation of research data\u2019 this month, implying it will likely face correction or retraction,\u201d according to the paper.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/stanford-president-marc-tessier-lavigne-resigns-after-flaws-found-in-his-research\/\">investigation<\/a>\u00a0leading to the former president\u2019s resignation in July determined data \u201cwere manipulated in some published scientific papers on which he was a main contributor,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/stanford-president-tessier-lavigne-resigns-amid-concerns-over-research-practices-2c7229eb\">according<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<em>The Wall Street Journal.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>An investigative panel also stated Tessier-Lavigne \u201cfailed to decisively correct mistakes in published papers as they were uncovered and had lapses in oversight of his labs at multiple institutions,\u201d the outlet reported.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>      <span class=\"field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden\"><a title=\"View user profile.\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/users\/tyler-durden\" class=\"username\">Tyler Durden<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden\">Thu, 01\/11\/2024 &#8211;
