Taiwan’s Thinly-Woven Diplomatic Web<\/span><\/p>\n

Nauru<\/strong>, a small island country in the southwestern Pacific, announced on Monday that it was realigning its diplomatic ties to China<\/strong>, having previously been an ally of\u00a0Taiwan<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The move came shortly after Lai Ching-te of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) won Taiwan\u2019s presidential election on January 13<\/strong>. Lai was formerly vice president to Tsai Ing-wen, Taiwan\u2019s first female president, who stepped down from the role after finishing the maximum permitted two terms in office.<\/strong> Both DPP figureheads are considered separatists by Beijing.<\/p>\n

Taipei has responded to Nauru\u2019s announcement by cutting diplomatic ties with the island nation.<\/p>\n

As Statista’s Anna Fleck shows in the following chart<\/em><\/a>, the Taiwanese government can only count on the official support of a few small states around the world. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Currently, only 12 independent countries recognize the Taipei government, <\/strong>according to\u00a0Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The majority are located in Latin America and the Caribbean,<\/strong> including Paraguay, Guatemala, Belize, Saint Lucia, St Kitts and Nevis, St Vincent & the Grenadines and Haiti.<\/p>\n

Taiwan’s other three island nation allies are in Southeast Asia,<\/strong> namely Palau, Tuvalu and the Marshall Islands.<\/p>\n

This list is rounded off with the Kingdom of Eswatini, located in Southern Africa, and the Vatican City State, in Europe.<\/p>\n

Saturday\u2019s election has been dubbed the island territory\u2019s \u201cmost closely watched<\/a>\u201d vote since its first in 1996, following rising tensions with China, including the bolstering of\u00a0Beijing\u2019s military presence in the Taiwan Strait<\/a>\u00a0and South China Sea.<\/p>\n

China considers Taiwan as part of its territory and has said that it wants to \u201creunify\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
