{"id":1451211,"date":"2024-01-17T13:26:14","date_gmt":"2024-01-17T18:26:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1451211"},"modified":"2024-01-17T13:26:14","modified_gmt":"2024-01-17T18:26:14","slug":"rate-cut-hopes-plunge-after-uk-inflation-lagarde-misfire-waller-walkback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/rate-cut-hopes-plunge-after-uk-inflation-lagarde-misfire-waller-walkback\/1451211\/","title":{"rendered":"Rate-Cut Hopes Plunge After UK Inflation, Lagarde Misfire, Waller Walkback"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Rate-Cut Hopes Plunge After UK Inflation, Lagarde Misfire, Waller Walkback<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>Fed Governor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/markets\/stocks-bonds-tumble-after-feds-waller-sends-rate-cut-odds-reeling\">Waller started it with a significant reversal<\/a> from his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/markets\/waller-whacks-dollar-dovish-fed-hawk-sparks-bid-bullion-bonds-bitcoin\">earlier dovish exuberance<\/a> that helped kick off an unprecedented rally in bonds and stocks (and easing of financial conditions to end last year), but positioning The Fed&#8217;s next move as slow and steady and no rush (suggesting a March start is off the tabel and six cuts are unlikely).<\/p>\n<p>Then Christine Lagarde attempted some open-mouth operations this morning from Davos, seemingly issuing forward guidance on the ECB&#8217;s actions (but notably walking back the expectations of an April cut). When asked about rate-cuts in 2024, she replied:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cI would say it\u2019s likely too,\u201d <\/strong>Lagarde said. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBut I have to be reserved, because we are also saying that we are data dependent, and that there is still a level of uncertainty and some indicators that are not anchored at the level where we would like to see them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Lagarde also warned that market expectations weren\u2019t helping policy makers in their fight against inflation.<\/p>\n<p>And then UK inflation hit, <strong>reaccelerating unexpectedly for the first time in 10 months<\/strong>. The\u00a0Consumer Prices Index\u00a0rose 4% from a year earlier in December, up from a 3.9% rise the previous month, the Office for National Statistics said Wednesday. Economists had\u00a0expected\u00a0a slight fall to 3.8%. Services inflation also increased, and a core measure stripping out food and energy held at 5.1%.<\/p>\n<p>UK food inflation continued to slow, dropping to 8% from 9.2% in November. That was more than offset by an increase in alcohol and tobacco prices, which rose by 12.8% from a year ago.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/bfm88BB.jpg?itok=GqWfGv8X\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>BOE Governor\u00a0Andrew Bailey\u00a0has stuck to his higher-for-longer messaging on rates, warning that January\u2019s CPI figures could show an increase due to higher household energy bills.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe rise in inflation today suggests that\u00a0<strong>the market has got ahead of itself in expecting early rate reductions,<\/strong>\u201d said Ed Monk, associate director at Fidelity International.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cToday\u2019s reading is a setback.
