{"id":1453957,"date":"2024-01-30T01:20:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-30T06:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1453957"},"modified":"2024-01-30T01:20:00","modified_gmt":"2024-01-30T06:20:00","slug":"drought-hits-canadas-hydropower-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/drought-hits-canadas-hydropower-sector\/1453957\/","title":{"rendered":"Drought Hits Canada&#8217;s Hydropower Sector"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Drought Hits Canada&#8217;s Hydropower Sector<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p><em>By Tsvetana Paraskova of <a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Latest-Energy-News\/World-News\/Drought-Hits-Canadas-Hydropower-Sector.html\">Oilprice.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s western provinces have been hit by the worst drought in years and provincial utilities are getting into losses as their hydropower generating capacities are lower amid low reservoir levels.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/canada%20drought.jpg?itok=vysPebKH\"><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In British Columbia, drought in the past year has forced BC Hydro to draw water for hydropower generation from the least affected areas and to import electricity, executives have told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/drought-in-western-canada-impacting-hydropower-production-as-reservoirs-run-low-1.2027727\">Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>British Columbia\u2019s utility corporation has been importing more electricity from neighboring Alberta and from some western U.S. states. No blackouts are expected but electricity imports have increased in recent months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are steps we will continue to take in the coming months,\u201d BC Hydro spokesman Kyle Donaldson told Bloomberg, describing the drought conditions as \u201chistoric\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, BC Hydro <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bchydro.com\/news\/press_centre\/news_releases\/2023\/high-degrees-drought-and-damaged-trees-may-mean-more-outages.html\">said<\/a> in October that it \u201cprepares year-round and has stepped up its vegetation management program in recent years given the drought and weather-related challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough BC Hydro\u2019s smaller plants on the South Coast have recovered, its larger facilities in the north and southeast of the province are still at lower-than-normal reservoir water levels for this time of year,\u201d the company said at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBC Hydro is taking steps to actively manage the drought, including conserving water by drawing on less impacted regions and importing more power \u2013 a common activity during low water years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the record peak hourly electricity demand in the cold snap in the middle of January 2024, BC Hydro <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bchydro.com\/news\/press_centre\/news_releases\/2024\/record-breaking-electricity-demand-helps-neighbours.html\">said<\/a> that \u201cThough the historic drought has impacted some of BC Hydro\u2019s largest reservoirs \u2013 the source of water for the clean power it generates \u2013 in the north and southeast of the province, its team has been planning in real-time for over a year to manage these conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/natural-resources.canada.ca\/our-natural-resources\/energy-sources-distribution\/electricity-infrastructure\/about-electricity\/7359\">federal government<\/a>, Canada is the second-largest producer of hydroelectricity in the world.
