EU Wants All ‘Gendered Language’ Erased<\/span><\/p>\n

A European Union body has called for all \u2018gendered language\u2019 to be purged from existence, including completely innocuous sayings such as \u2018Joe Public\u2019, as well as words such as \u2018virile\u2019 which it claims are too often associated with men.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Telegraph\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0that The European Institute for Gender Equality\u00a0(yes that exists) has compelled a 61-page document outlining what words should be wiped from existence and have more \u201csensitive\u201d replacements.<\/p>\n

The document has been named\u00a0Toolkit on Gender-sensitive Communication<\/em>. Examples of words and terms to be resigned to the dustbin of history include \u2018Master of ceremonies,\u2019 \u2018No man\u2019s land,\u2019 \u2018Manpower,\u2019 and \u2018Repairman.\u2019<\/p>\n

In EU Newspeak, those terms would become \u2018host,\u2019 \u2018Unclaimed territory,\u2019 \u2018human power,\u2019 and \u2018Repairer\u2019, while they want the term \u2018Joe public\u2019 replaced with \u2018average citizen\u2019.<\/p>\n

Comply average citizen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Conservative MP Nigel Mills commented \u201cThis is utter madness. It\u2019s an attack on the English language.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The EU also suggests swapping around the words \u2018King and Queen\u2019, so Queen comes first. The fundamental problem with this is that the reason people put \u2018King\u2019 first is because he\u2019s the guy in charge. He was supposedly chosen by God to be the leader. The Queen is just the woman he married. She isn\u2019t in charge of anything. Swapping around words doesn\u2019t change that concept, it just makes you sound a bit stupid.<\/p>\n

Where this gets really creepy, however, is with the call to erase words that have nothing to do with gender.<\/p>\n

The document suggests that words like \u2018bossy,\u2019 \u2018pushy,\u2019 and shrill should not be used because they \u201chave strong connotations that are strongly associated with only women\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

They used the word \u2018strong\u2019 twice there.<\/p>\n

Suggested newspeak replacements for those words\u2002are \u2018assertive\u2019 and \u2018high-pitched\u2019 or \u2018grating voice\u2019.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s try this out for size.<\/p>\n

\u2018The female sports commentator is annoyingly high pitched and has a very grating voice\u2019.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Is that acceptable?<\/p>\n

The EU institute also wants to consign the concept of virility to the scrapheap, reasoning that it is \u201cstrongly associated with only men\u201d and should be replaced by \u201cstrong or energetic.\u201d<\/p>\n

They really do like the word \u2018strong.\u2019<\/p>\n

The development comes in the wake of legions of other efforts to police and change language considered to be \u2018insensitive\u2019 or \u2018gendered\u2019.<\/p>\n
