CU Boulder Professor Dresses Like Butterfly To Fight “Climate Anxiety”<\/span><\/p>\n

A theatre professor at the University of Colorado Boulder fights her \u201cclimate anxiety\u201d by dressing and performing as a butterfly.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Theatre Professor Beth Osnes (pictured<\/em>), who also teaches environmental studies classes, became \u201cincreasingly discouraged about the perilous state of our planet,\u201d according to\u00a0Colorado Public Radio<\/a>. Her despair came while \u201cshe began doing research for one of her classes,\u00a0Creative Climate Communication.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI started to get that terrible ooze feeling, that comes in like a sickness that you get from despair. It was like swallowing crude oil or something,\u201d Osnes told the news station. \u201cJust the knowledge of what\u2019s happening to our planet, it feels almost disabling. <\/strong>It almost puts your heart on the ground. And we can\u2019t address the climate crisis if our hearts are on the ground.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIn fact, the emotions that Osnes is describing \u2014 feeling helpless and despair around the climate crisis \u2014 have a name: climate anxiety,\u201d <\/strong>CPR reported.<\/em><\/p>\n

She performs her \u201cButterfly Affect Experience\u201d \u201cto inspire a collective commitment to co-create a world that is equitable, sustainable, and conducive to thriving life and ecosystems,\u201d according to promotional material for a recent performance.<\/p>\n

Florida State University Professor Sarah Fahmy also partakes, according to the\u00a0event description<\/a>. Fahmy previously studied at CU Boulder.<\/p>\n

Osnes also produced a \u201cclimate musical\u201d for young people to perform, according to her faculty bio and founded a group \u201cfor female and non-binary youth vocal empowerment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The performance does help her cope with her grief from losing her spouse, as well.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI was widowed two years ago and I had to do a complete re-changing of myself \u2026 We can learn from the natural world that change doesn\u2019t have to be scary, it can be beautiful even after loss,\u201d Osnes said.<\/em><\/p>\n

Most of her scholarship focuses on the intersection between creative arts and climate change.<\/p>\n

Published papers include, \u201cLens on Climate Change: Making Climate Meaningful Through Student-Produced Videos,\u201d \u201cA Laughing Matter? Confronting climate change through humor,\u201d and \u201cExamining Climate Change and Sustainable\/Fast Fashion in the 21st century: \u2018Trash the Runway.’\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Young America\u2019s Foundation, which\u00a0first reported<\/a>\u00a0on Osnes, commented that \u201c\u2018Climate anxiety\u2019 has been peddled by the Left for decades. Unfortunately, many young people are being misguided by their teachers and professors into believing that the world is going to end, and the only way to stop it from doing so is to fall in line with the Left\u2019s climate agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cClimate anxiety\u201d afflicts most of Gen Z, according to a 2018 Gallup poll. \u201c70% of Americans age 18 to 34 worry about global warming,\u201d the polling company\u00a0reported<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

However, at least one professor is concerned that most of the concern comes primarily from white people.<\/p>\n

\u201c[A] year into the pandemic, after the murder of George Floyd and the protests that followed, and the attack on the U.S. Capitol, I am deeply concerned about the racial implications of climate anxiety,\u201d California State Polytechnic University Humboldt Professor Sarah Ray wrote in 2021, as\u00a0previously reported<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0The College Fix.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIf people of color are more concerned about climate change than white people, why is the interest in climate anxiety so white?\u00a0Is climate anxiety a form of white fragility or even\u00a0racial\u00a0anxiety?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
