The Future Of American Energy Production Must Include Nuclear<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s the coldest\u00a0time\u00a0of the year<\/strong>, and the demand for energy is significantly higher\u00a0as people try to warm\u00a0their homes.\u00a0According to the\u00a0U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA)<\/a>,\u00a0in Alabama\u00a0seven out of ten homes rely on\u00a0electric heating\u00a0during the winter months. Increasing demand is placing a strain on our power grid, and the Biden\u00a0administration\u00a0has no solution to the problem.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Instead of providing families with reliable energy,\u00a0Joe Biden and his administration have other priorities.<\/strong>\u00a0They\u2019ve spent the last three years on a crusade\u00a0to\u00a0make\u00a0America dependent\u00a0on unreliable energy\u00a0sources\u00a0such as wind and solar power, all in the name of\u00a0supposedly fighting \u201cclimate change.\u201d While wind and solar\u00a0have\u00a0roles\u00a0to play in\u00a0domestic energy production, we simply cannot rely\u00a0on\u00a0them. The sun doesn\u2019t always\u00a0shine\u00a0and the wind doesn\u2019t always blow, but our energy grid needs to\u00a0run\u00a024 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.<\/p>\n

Despite Joe Biden\u2019s best efforts, most of\u00a0our\u00a0energy still comes from fossil fuels such as oil and natural gas.<\/strong>\u00a0Democrats\u00a0don\u2019t like to admit this, but when wind and solar power fail, the backup generators are powered by\u00a0oil and natural gas. Without\u00a0fossil fuels, our energy grid and our economy could not function.<\/p>\n

To keep prices low and capacity high, the U.S. must have an\u00a0\u201call-of-the-above\u201d\u00a0approach to American energy production.\u00a0This must include investing\u00a0in nuclear power.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Right now, nuclear energy accounts for approximately 20% of our power grid, which is more than wind and solar combined. The U.S. has the most nuclear power production of any country in the world, but we could be producing even more. Burdensome regulations and bureaucratic red tape from the Biden administration are slowing down nuclear permitting and production from doing even more.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Once again, Democrat politicians would rather play politics than do what is best\u00a0for the working people of this country. They know their\u00a0left-wing voter base hates nuclear energy\u2014and they won\u2019t risk offending them.\u00a0<\/p>\n

There is neither an economic\u00a0nor\u00a0a scientific basis for opposition to nuclear energy, which is the single most efficient source of energy known to man. <\/strong>It is\u00a08,000<\/a>\u00a0times more efficient than fossil fuels\u2014which are\u00a0already\u00a0much more efficient than wind and solar\u00a0power. This efficiency grants\u00a0nuclear power an unparalleled ability to bring down the price of energy\u2014and, in turn,\u00a0reduce\u00a0prices throughout our economy.<\/p>\n

Nuclear is also\u00a0safe for the\u00a0environment. Nuclear energy produces zero emissions and removes harmful pollutants from the atmosphere. Claims that nuclear energy production\u00a0is dangerous are simply outdated. After the Three Mile Island accident in 1979, there was a panic among\u00a0Americans, and the federal government canceled\u00a0President Nixon\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0goal of building 1,000 nuclear reactors.\u00a0Despite\u00a0zero deaths<\/a>\u00a0from the Three Mile Island incident, our\u00a0energy policy has never recovered from this mistake\u00a0and continues declining with\u00a0the close of\u00a013<\/a>\u00a0American nuclear reactors\u00a0since 2013.<\/p>\n

Scientists are always working to learn from the past and improve our technical knowledge.<\/strong> We know\u00a0a lot\u00a0more about nuclear safety now than we did in 1979. Our technology is better than ever\u00a0and\u00a0continues\u00a0to improve\u00a0each day.<\/p>\n

Alabama understands this better than almost any state\u00a0as we are\u00a0proud to be the nation\u2019s fifth-largest producer of nuclear energy with two nuclear plants and five nuclear reactors. The Tennessee Valley Authority\u00a0(TVA)\u00a0operates\u00a0Browns Ferry<\/a> in Athens, Alabama, which is their largest nuclear plant and has the second-largest nuclear power generating capacity in the nation. Browns Ferry directly supports 1,500 Alabama jobs and powers more than two million homes.<\/p>\n

On the other end of the state, just outside of Dothan, Alabama Power runs\u00a0Plant Farley<\/a>, generating nearly 20% of Alabama Power\u2019s electricity. Plant Farley supports 900 good jobs in the Wiregrass area, and I am grateful to Alabama\u2019s energy workers for keeping the lights on for us.<\/p>\n

America needs to\u00a0learn\u00a0from\u00a0Alabama. We need to stop the obsession with wind and solar energy and\u00a0do a better job of\u00a0investing\u00a0in nuclear energy. The polls show that a clear majority of the public\u00a0wants\u00a0more nuclear power\u2014and that majority is growing by the day. It\u2019s good economics. It\u2019s good energy policy. It\u2019s good environmental policy. And it\u2019s long overdue.<\/p>\n
