The $74 billion number came from economist Julianne Malveaux who apparently believes the slaves never slept.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAn estimated $365 million in unpaid labor was announced, and with added interest over time, amounts to $70 billion, according to Malveaux,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/mo\/st-louis\/news\/2024\/02\/08\/descendants-of-slaves-who-helped-build-slu-ask-for--70b-in-compensation\">as reported<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0Spectrum News. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe number was based on labor done 24 hours per day, 365 days per year for 70 enslaved people from 1823-1865, she said.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cWe\u2019re not asking for a handout. We\u2019re asking for their debt to be paid,\u201d <\/strong>one descendant said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The group is represented by Areva Martin (<em>pictured below<\/em>), a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ArevaMartin\">civil rights attorney<\/a>\u201d and CNN commentator.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2024-02-16_10-56-28.jpg?itok=cnxi2WJD\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While the university\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/complaints-prompt-catholic-university-to-remove-statue-of-priest-praying-over-indians\/\">usually caves<\/a>\u00a0to demands from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/saint-louis-u-walks-back-plans-occupy-slu-monument\/\">racial activists<\/a>, they weren\u2019t as promising that they\u2019d hand over $74 billion.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSLU\u2019s participation in the institution of slavery was a grave sin. We acknowledge that progress on our efforts to reconcile with this shameful history has been slow, and we regret the hurt and frustration this has caused,\u201d the university told the media.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cContinuing this work is a priority for SLU and the Society of Jesus,\u201d the university stated. \u201cAs we move forward, we hope to re-establish and build deeper relationships with all descendant families, to explore together how best to honor the memory of those who were enslaved by the Jesuits.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Georgetown University, which is also run by the Jesuits, created a $1 billion fund to compensate for its past involvement in slavery. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, there are no direct payments and descendants have questioned where the money is going.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cNOBODY( Georgetown \/SOJ\/ The Descendant Truth and Reconciliation) TALKS TO US,\u201d <\/strong><\/em>one descendant\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/slave-descendants-question-georgetowns-1-billion-reparations-fund\/\">told<\/a>\u00a0<em>The College Fix<\/em>\u00a0in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Georgetown first announced the plan to much fanfare, including a\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/jesuits-wants-to-raise-1-billion-for-atonement-program-because-georgetown-sold-slaves-in-1838\/\">write-up<\/a>. The D.C. university planned to raise $1 billion, according to an April 2021 announcement, with a short-term goal of $100 million.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In May 2023, the university announced the first five recipients of grants from a $400,000 per year pool.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Georgetown\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgetown.edu\/news\/georgetown-awards-funding-to-5-projects-that-support-descendant-communities\/\">announced<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>The five projects, located in Maryland and Louisiana, have a variety of goals and communities they\u2019ll reach, including engaging young adults in rebuilding blighted homes in New Orleans; providing free legal services to families of loved ones with severe mental illnesses; uniting and connecting members of the Descendant community; launching a high school tutoring program that\u2019s co-organized by a Descendant and Georgetown community members; and providing educational programming for children.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Should SLU pay reparations to the slave descendants?<\/p>\n<p>Probably not.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It is not clear how they have suffered direct harm from their ancestors being enslaved.
