{"id":1459113,"date":"2024-02-24T15:30:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-24T20:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1459113"},"modified":"2024-02-24T15:30:00","modified_gmt":"2024-02-24T20:30:00","slug":"native-american-tribes-given-power-to-block-hydropower-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/native-american-tribes-given-power-to-block-hydropower-projects\/1459113\/","title":{"rendered":"Native American Tribes Given Power To Block Hydropower Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Native American Tribes Given Power To Block Hydropower Projects <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p><em>By Charles Kennedy of <a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Latest-Energy-News\/World-News\/Native-American-Tribes-Given-Power-To-Halt-Hydropower-Projects.html\">OilPrice.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has granted Native American tribes more power to block hydropower projects on their lands if they oppose the plans. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2024-02-23_gsk67fs9ce.jpg?itok=r4qhbZ4y\"><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>FERC has previously applied the general policy of granting permits to planned hydropower projects even where Tribes have raised issues over the impact of such projects, which require enormous amounts of water in areas such as the Southwest, where water is scarce.<\/p>\n<p>However, FERC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grandcanyontrust.org\/sites\/default\/files\/maps\/resources\/BLACK-MESA-FERC-PermitDenied20240215-3064.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">denied<\/a>\u00a0last week preliminary permit applications for seven pumped storage hydroelectric projects proposed on Navajo Nation land, and said it has recently revised the \u201cgeneral policy of granting permits.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The federal regulator\u2019s trust responsibility to Tribes should be similar to when permits have been opposed by federal land managers or similarly affected federal agencies, the commission said.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, FERC is \u201cestablishing a new policy that the Commission will not issue preliminary permits for projects proposing to use Tribal lands if the Tribe on whose lands the project is to be located opposes the permit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>FERC advises potential applicants to work closely with Tribal stakeholders prior to filing applications to ensure that Tribes are fully informed about proposed projects on their lands and to determine whether they are willing to consider the project development. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cIt is encouraging to see federal decision makers honoring the trust responsibilities to Native American Tribes,\u201d <\/strong><\/em>Nicole Horseherder, executive director of the Navajo nonprofit T\u00f3 Nizh\u00f3n\u00ed \u00c1n\u00ed, said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kuer.org\/politics-government\/2024-02-16\/federal-energy-regulators-deny-permits-for-a-controversial-project-on-the-navajo-nation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, the Hopi Tribe\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grandcanyontrust.org\/sites\/default\/files\/resources\/FERC_HopiPR-2-19-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called on<\/a>\u00a0the regulator to change its rules for granting preliminary permits for hydroelectric projects on tribal lands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>      <span class=\"field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden\"><a title=\"View user profile.\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/users\/tyler-durden\" class=\"username\">Tyler Durden<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden\">Sat, 02\/24\/2024 &#8211;
