Google CEO Pledged To Use AI To Counter “Fake News”, Racism, & Populism After Trump Victory<\/span><\/p>\n

Google CEO Sundar Pichai today\u00a0addressed<\/a>\u00a0public upset with its AI chatbot, Gemini, for its\u00a0political bias<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to address the recent issues with problematic text and image responses in the Gemini app (formerly Bard),\u201d he wrote. <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI know that some of its responses have offended our users and shown bias \u2013 to be clear, that\u2019s completely unacceptable and we got it wrong.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

But Google\u2019s bias has been on public display since August 2017,<\/strong> when Pichai fired a Google employee named James Damore for writing\u00a0a ten-page memo<\/a>\u00a0criticizing the company’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies, particularly its \u201cBias-Busting\u201d training.<\/p>\n

And the partisan bias of Google was expressed a few days after voters elected Donald Trump as president during an \u201call hands\u201d employee meeting.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been an extraordinarily stressful time for many of you,\u201d Pichai said to Google employees. <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI certainly find this election deeply offensive,\u201d<\/strong> said Google cofounder Sergey Brin, \u201cand I know many of you do too.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

One Google executive nearly started crying when recounting that Trump won.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was this massive kick in the gut that we were gonna lose,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd it was really painful.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Pichai struck a more neutral political tone in comparison to his colleagues.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are in a democratic system,\u201d he said.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI think part of the reason the outcome ended up the way it is is [because] people don’t feel heard across both sides.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

But after a Google employee suggested that Trump won due to \u201cmisinformation\u201d and \u201cfake news coming from fake news websites being shared by millions of low-information voters on social media,\u201d<\/strong> Pichai specifically pointed to the use of artificial intelligence to achieve the aim of countering \u201cmisinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think our investments in machine learning and AI is a big opportunity here,\u201d he said. Machine learning is a form of AI.<\/em><\/p>\n

Pichai then suggested that Google was already manipulating search results.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThere are many, many places where we are ranking,\u201d he said, \u201cwe are algorithmically doing stuff\u2026understanding some of the things that are happening, and course correcting.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Pichai emphasized that there would be a technological solution to the information that Google executives believed had resulted in Trump\u2019s victory.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a problem of scale and not being able to keep up. Human systems fail in many of these things. So I think investing more in machine learning and AI could be one way we actually make progress.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
