Its primary purpose is to facilitate cooperation among member nations and ensure mutual defense and security.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2023, only 11 member countries were on track to meet NATO\u2019s target of spending 2% of their country\u2019s GDP on defense.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. accounted for 68% of the total defense expenditures by NATO countries, or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/breaking-down-1-3t-in-nato-defense-spending\/\">$860 billion<\/a>. According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.pl\/web\/national-defence\/poland-in-nato-20-years\">polls<\/a>, two-thirds of Poles hold a favorable opinion regarding NATO\u2019s activities.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, significant economic and military powers are among the members that are falling short.
