Macron Doubles-Down On NATO Sending Troops To Ukraine Remarks<\/span><\/p>\n

French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday\u00a0stood behind his comments<\/a>\u00a0about NATO not ruling out sending troops to Ukraine despite the uproar it caused and the warning it drew from Russia.<\/p>\n

“These are sufficiently serious issues; every one of the words that I say on this issue is weighed<\/strong>, thought through, and measured,”<\/em> Macron told reporters.<\/p>\n

Following a meeting of European leaders on the Ukrainian proxy war on Monday, Macron said, “There\u2019s no consensus today to send in an official, endorsed manner troops on the ground<\/strong>. But in terms of dynamics, nothing can be ruled out<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

His comments appeared to confirm a warning from Slovakia\u2019s Prime Minister Robert Fico<\/strong>, an opponent of NATO support for Ukraine, who said earlier that some NATO members were considering sending troops to Ukraine on a “bilateral basis.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Macron\u2019s comments caused many NATO members to refute the idea that they\u2019re considering sending combat troops to Ukraine, although\u00a0it\u2019s an open secret<\/a>\u00a0that there are a small number of NATO special operations forces already in the country<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

One NATO country that\u00a0backed up Macron\u00a0<\/a>is Lithuania, the Baltic nation that borders Kaliningrad and has an active duty military that only consists of\u00a0only about 15,000 troops.<\/a><\/p>\n

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis welcomed Macron\u2019s comments, saying, “No option can be rejected out of hand.” <\/strong>The country\u2019s defense minister, Arvydas Anu\u0161auskas, said troops could potentially be sent to Ukraine for training, not for combat.<\/p>\n

The Kremlin has warned that the deployment of Western troops to Ukraine would make a direct Russia-NATO war inevitable. Russian President Vladimir Putin warned on Thursday that Russia\u2019s nuclear arsenal is on “full combat alert.”<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
