Alaskan Fishermen Find Suspected Spy Balloon <\/span><\/p>\n

A US official confirmed to\u00a0CBS News<\/a>\u00a0on Friday night that fishermen off the coast of Alaska have found what appears to be a “pretty big balloon<\/strong>.” Speaking with government sources, other corporate media outlets said the debris\u00a0could be a Chinese spy balloon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The crew of the commercial fishing vessel managed to lift the debris out of the water and is\u00a0hauling it back to a port in Alaska sometime this weekend<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sources tell\u00a0CNN<\/a>\u00a0that FBI agents will meet the vessel when it arrives at port. Agents will then load the debris into a plane, where it will be\u00a0analyzed at the FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia<\/strong>. This is the same lab that has analyzed other Chinese surveillance balloons.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“The\u00a0fishermen shared photographs of the object with law enforcement<\/strong>\u00a0upon encountering it,” the sources said.<\/p>\n

CNN pointed out:\u00a0<\/p>\n

All three sources emphasized that it wasn’t clear exactly what the object was and that it may not be a balloon at all \u2014 but that the\u00a0<\/em>FBI determined that it was similar enough in appearance to a foreign-government-owned surveillance balloon that it warranted further investigation<\/em><\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

The FBI acknowledged the debris in a statement last night:<\/p>\n

“<\/em>We are aware of debris found off the coast of Alaska<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0by a commercial fishing vessel. We will work with our partners to assist with the logistics of the debris recovery.”<\/em><\/p>\n

This comes one week after a\u00a0mysterious high-altitude balloon<\/a>\u00a0was intercepted by NORAD fighter jets over Utah – and one year after a Chinese surveillance balloon was shot down off the coast of South Carolina.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
