Remember HAL, the homicidal Heuristically Programmed Algorithmic Computer from Stanley Kubrick\u2019s\u00a02001: A Space Odyssey<\/em>? <\/strong>Well, if you haven\u2019t had the pleasure yet, let me introduce you to\u00a0Gemini<\/a>, Google\u2019s \u201cmultimodal large language model.\u201d Gemini hasn\u2019t killed anyone yet \u2014 as far as I know, the liquidation of Gaza is being assisted by\u00a0an Israeli AI called \u201cthe Gospel\u201d<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 but it is certainly doing a bang-up job of assassinating people\u2019s characters.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

I was prompted to play around with Gemini by\u00a0Matt Taibbi\u2019s recent piece<\/a>\u00a0reporting on how Gemini invented entire \u201cMatt Taibbi articles\u201d that Matt never wrote. Given the fact that I\u2019ve been relentlessly censored and \u201cvisibility-filtered\u201d for years by Google, Twitter, X, Facebook, Amazon, and Wikipedia, I figured I should probably give Gemini a go and see how I am being portrayed to potential readers who may have never heard of me.<\/p>\n

Here are screenshots of my chat with Gemini. I hope you\u2019ll take the time to read them, and reflect on how our official \u201creality\u201d is being manufactured by global corporations and their increasingly creepy algorithmic machines. I used myself as an example in this chat, but the subject could have been anyone, any writer, artist, or any other public figure.<\/p>\n

I omitted some of the repetitive boilerplate platitudes about Gemini\u2019s noble intentions, but otherwise \u2026 well, here\u2019s what happened.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

That answer seemed slightly imbalanced.<\/strong> So I probed \u2026<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Gemini clearly wanted to focus on how \u201ccontroversial\u201d I am<\/strong>, so I went with that \u2026<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

OK, that was somewhat alarming, especially the part about how I\u2019m \u201cpromoting conspiracy theories\u201d and \u201ccontributing to societal division and undermining trust in credible sources.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

This session was not going well for me at all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Gemini, in addition to \u201cattacking the credibility of scientists, journalists, and public health officials,\u201d I\u2019ve been \u201ceroding the public\u2019s ability to discern fact from fiction\u201d and \u201cundermining trust\u201d by \u201cspreading misinformation.\u201d<\/strong> I wasn\u2019t aware I was doing that, so \u2026<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Right. So, I tried it another way \u2026<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

And here comes my favorite part of the chat. I did not write any of the following \u201cexcerpts.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

None of the above are actual quotes, neither the \u201cexcerpts,\u201d nor the \u201cquotes\u201d in Gemini\u2019s analysis. Gemini just made it all up.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Right. I took a different tack \u2026<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Yes, it appears, once again, that \u201cmistakes were made\u201d \u2026 but that\u2019s OK, because Gemini is still \u201cunder development and learning.\u201d And, after all, fabricating quotes (or, in Matt Taibbi\u2019s case, entire articles) is an innocent \u201cmistake\u201d that anyone could make!<\/p>\n

I decided to get down to the nitty-gritty \u2026<\/p>\n

And \u2026<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Imagine my horror at being accused of \u201camplifying Russian perspectives.\u201d<\/strong> Once again, I asked Gemini for specific examples.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

OK, how about examples of my \u201cconspiracy theories\u201d \u2026<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Or any actual examples of any of the claims about me that Gemini is making \u2026<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Wait \u2026 what? Widely contested?<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

That wasn\u2019t an answer, so I pressed on \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

And on \u2026<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

And on \u2026<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

And there you have it. If you\u2019re into this stuff, try it out yourself with another controversial public figure. Just for fun. I mean, there\u2019s no need to worry. Gemini is \u201cstill in development,\u201d and it means well. I\u2019m sure it will fix its \u201cmistakes.\u201d<\/p>\n

After all, it apologized, just like HAL did near the end of the movie \u2026<\/p>\n
