{"id":1461214,"date":"2024-03-07T08:30:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-07T13:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1461214"},"modified":"2024-03-07T08:30:00","modified_gmt":"2024-03-07T13:30:00","slug":"the-eu-wants-fossil-fuel-firms-to-contribute-to-climate-fund","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/the-eu-wants-fossil-fuel-firms-to-contribute-to-climate-fund\/1461214\/","title":{"rendered":"The EU Wants Fossil Fuel Firms To Contribute To Climate Fund"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">The EU Wants Fossil Fuel Firms To Contribute To Climate Fund<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Latest-Energy-News\/World-News\/The-EU-Wants-Fossil-Fuel-Firms-to-Contribute-to-Climate-Fund.html\"><em>Authored by Charles Kennedy via OilPrice.com,<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Oil and gas companies could be a source of additional funding for a UN climate financing to help developing economies cope with the consequences of climate change,<\/strong> according to a draft EU document seen by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/sustainable-finance-reporting\/eu-wants-fossil-fuel-sector-help-pay-combat-climate-change-draft-shows-2024-03-04\/\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2024-03-04_ishok9qrqe.jpg?itok=KVtyuSU8\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After failing so far to establish a clear-cut framework of how much wealthy developed nations should contribute to a fund to help developing economies, the next COP summit in Azerbaijan at the end of this year is seen as the deadline for reaching some kind of a deal. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The COP29 climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, is expected to decide in November if the climate finance goal should include only public funding, or raise funds from the private sector and international institutions, too.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The EU, which aims for carbon neutrality by 2050, is looking at the fossil fuels sector for potential additional contributions to these funds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cRecognising that public finance alone cannot provide the quantum necessary for the new goal, additional, new and innovative sources of finance from a wide variety of sources, including from the fossil fuel sector, should be identified and utilised,\u201d <\/strong>according to the draft EU statement which Reuters has seen and which has been prepared for a meeting of the foreign ministers of the bloc later in March. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Developed economies need to provide\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Latest-Energy-News\/World-News\/India-Calls-For-1-Trillion-Annual-Climate-Funding-from-Developed-Economies.html\">at least $1 trillion per year<\/a>\u00a0to climate finance for developing countries to meet the national and global climate targets, one of the biggest developing economies and a major carbon polluter, India, said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/sites\/default\/files\/resource\/202402131316---India_NCQG%20submission%20%281%29.pdf\">proposal<\/a>\u00a0to the United Nations last month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Developed countries have pledged to support developing economies with funding to address climate change and reduce emissions.<\/strong> Developing countries have been arguing for years that they cannot meet climate goals without substantial international mobilization of finance.
