While estimating the exact number of followers for each faith poses a considerable challenge, Visual Capitalist’s Jeff Desjardins notes<\/a> that figures from reputable sources like\u00a0Britannica<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Pew Research<\/a>\u00a0provide valuable insights into the global religious landscape.<\/p>\n

The Religions With the Most Followers<\/h2>\n

Below are the seven most popular religions, based on Britannica\u2019s analysis and estimates:<\/p>\n

Note: These estimates provide a broad perspective on the distribution of followers for each religion, recognizing the inherent difficulty in accurately counting global adherents.<\/em><\/p>\n

There are three major religions with over\u00a01 billion<\/strong>\u00a0followers: Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism.<\/p>\n

Buddhism is also a big player, with 500 million followers worldwide. After this, there\u2019s a significant dropoff, with the next three largest religions (Shint\u014d, Sikhism, and Judaism) adding up to fewer than 150 million followers between them.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also worth mentioning that practically speaking, many of these popular religions have various sects, denominations, branches, or interpretations that they can be further grouped into.<\/p>\n

For example, Christianity itself can be further\u00a0categorized<\/a>\u00a0into denominations such as Catholic (50.1%), Protestant (36.7%), Eastern Orthodox (9.4%), Oriental Orthodox (2.5%), and other smaller Christian denominations (1.3%).<\/p>\n

What Religions Missed the Cut?<\/h2>\n

Not captured in the above visual are many smaller organized religions, as well as folk and traditional religions, that are\u00a0distributed<\/a>\u00a0all around the world.<\/p>\n

Examples of notable religions that did not make the top seven list include: Taoism, Muism, Cao Dai, Bah\u00e1\u02bc\u00ed Faith, Jainism, Tenrikyo, Wicca, and Zoroastrianism.<\/p>\n
