Washington promised to sell dozens of the advanced fighter jets to Ankara and upgrade scores of Turkish F-16s in exchange for Turkey approving Sweden\u2019s NATO membership.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The AFP\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedefensepost.com\/2024\/06\/13\/turkey-us-f16-deal\/\">reported<\/a>\u00a0the deal was signed on Thursday. &#8220;The contract was signed and delegations from both sides are negotiating the details,&#8221; Turkish defense ministry sources told the outlet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/f16file1.jpg?itok=F3Mv6tVr\"><em>Getty Images<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The State Department said last week that it had taken significant steps towards finalizing the deal, which was proof of the deep military relationship between Washington and Ankara.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just the latest example of US enduring commitment to security partnership with Turkey,&#8221; it said in a statement on US government social media accounts.<\/p>\n<p>In January, President Biden sent a letter to Congress pushing Capitol Hill to approve the sale of F-16s to Turkey. Washington <strong>had conditioned the deal on Ankara lifting its months-long obstruction of Stockholm joining NATO<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since joining the bloc in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2024\/03\/07\/sweden-officially-joins-nato-ending-centuries-of-neutrality\/\">March<\/a>, Sweden has taken an aggressive approach towards Russia. <strong>Stockholm has approved Kiev using its weapons against targets inside Russia<\/strong>, and top Swedish officials have suggested Stockholm could join NATO\u2019s nuclear weapons sharing program.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Turkey was initially a partner in the F-35 project and was set to receive the latest American warplane.
