Eric Burlison, R-Mo.,<\/strong> and backed by several GOP heavy-hitters, including Reps. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, Andy Biggs of Arizona, Jim Banks of Indiana and Anna Paulina Luna of Florida.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution is sponsored by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepEricBurlison?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RepEricBurlison<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So far, the resolution has 24 GOP co-sponsors including Tom Massie, MTG, Andy Biggs, Jim Banks, and Anna Paulina Luna.<\/p>\n<p>We need every GOP vote to make this happen.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few issues with the J6 committee detailed here<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XfpDBvipTL\">pic.twitter.com\/XfpDBvipTL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Julie Kelly \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8 (@julie_kelly2) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/julie_kelly2\/status\/1803198727278174327?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 18, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>However, it also faces at least one powerful skeptic: Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan, R-Ohio.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In an exclusive interview with Headline USA on June 7, Jordan said that even though he supported the principle of it, he didn\u2019t see it being constructive from a practical standpoint, including helping ex-Trump adviser and well-known right-wing pundit Steve Bannon avoid his sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>I think both of those contempt [charges] were ridiculous<\/strong>,\u201d Jordan said, in reference to Bannon and Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro, during a June 7 fundraiser for congressional candidate Mark Harris in Monroe, N.C.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI opposed them on the House floor when they happened\u2014both Navarro and Bannon\u2014I spoke against them, as well as when they did it to our friend and North Carolina former representative Mark Meadows, when they did to him, spoke against all that,\u201d Jordan added. \u201c<strong>But I don\u2019t think that would change\u2014you could have that vote, but I don\u2019t think it\u2019ll change anything relative to what the courts have said and what happens to Bannon. \u2026 Even if we pass it, I don\u2019t think it would have an impact<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The proposal first picked up steam earlier this month after Massie raised it to Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La. and found many prominent supporters in the Twittersphere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis course of action is not only justified but necessary to restore fairness and balance in our government,\u201d wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/politiquerepublic.substack.com\/\">blogger<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/amuse\">influencer<\/a> Alexander Muse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRescinding these subpoenas and repudiating the January 6th Committee would send a clear message that politically motivated persecutions have no place in our Republic,\u201d he added. \u201cIt would also be a significant step towards protecting the integrity of executive privilege and ensuring that partisan politics do not undermine our democratic institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/yWUmkpUyfE\">https:\/\/t.co\/yWUmkpUyfE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 @amuse (@amuse) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amuse\/status\/1798897167848943722?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 7, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Massie, through his communications director, declined to comment, citing the libertarian lawmaker\u2019s a busy schedule.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s possible, however, that Jordan, a longtime friend and ally of Meadows, sees the prospect of unintended consequences arising from efforts to right the past grievance legislatively, now that Washington, D.C., courts have already ruled on the matter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It is highly likely, for example, that Democrats might use a similar tactic in the future to invalidate other committees whose work is legitimate.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Moreover, giving Bannon a get-out-of-jail-free card would have troubling implications for Meadows\u2014who opted to cooperate with the J6 committee\u2014and Navarro, whose four month sentence will <a href=\"https:\/\/headlineusa.com\/navarro-describes-harrowing-conditions-in-biden-jail-lawfare-is-real\/\">soon be completed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution might also derail plans that Jordan and Johnson already have in mind for holding Attorney General <a href=\"https:\/\/headlineusa.com\/tag\/merrick-garland\">Merrick Garland<\/a> accountable\u2014either legally or otherwise\u2014after he gave himself <a href=\"https:\/\/headlineusa.com\/garland-wont-prosecute-himself\/\">a free pass<\/a> last week for the exact same alleged crime: refusing a congressional subpoena on the basis of <a href=\"https:\/\/headlineusa.com\/tag\/executive-privilege\">executive privilege<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Following Garland\u2019s defiance, Johnson announced that he would be certifying the contempt report with U.S. Attorney for D.C. Matthew Graves and asking a federal court to enforce it.<\/p>\n<p>The House disagrees with the assertions in the letter from the Department of Justice, and as Speaker, I will be certifying the contempt reports to the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. We will also move to enforce the subpoena of Attorney General Garland in federal\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/YOzqzlKWtE\">https:\/\/t.co\/YOzqzlKWtE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Speaker Mike Johnson (@SpeakerJohnson) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SpeakerJohnson\/status\/1801748276674249005?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 14, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While Graves is unlikely to act, the move may help to extend its shelf life in the hopes that a future Trump administration could pursue it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>It is sadly predictable that the Biden Administration\u2019s Justice Department will not prosecute Garland for defying congressional subpoenas even though the department aggressively prosecuted Steve Bannon and Peter Navarro for the same thing,<\/strong>\u201d Johnson said in a statement. \u201cThis is yet another example of the two-tiered system of justice brought to us by the Biden Administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is also the latest procedural effort, however, for a GOP majority that often has been derided for its ham-fisted toothlessness relative to Pelosi\u2019s iron-fisted ruthlessness in undermining the prior Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>In Response To Trump Conviction, Republicans Threaten To Fire Off &#8216;Strongliest Worded Letter Of All Time&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/i3M1ijATZd\">https:\/\/t.co\/i3M1ijATZd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/w8cFiumEiq\">pic.twitter.com\/w8cFiumEiq<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Babylon Bee (@TheBabylonBee) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheBabylonBee\/status\/1798042518866809178?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 4, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite having <a href=\"https:\/\/headlineusa.com\/tag\/laptop-from-hell\">a laptop<\/a> teeming with incontrovertible evidence that has now been acknowledged by the FBI as authentic in a court of law, Republicans have been unable to <a href=\"https:\/\/headlineusa.com\/sellers-yes-impeachment-is-dead\/\">press their impeachment case<\/a> in any impactful way\u2014and, to some extent, the presence of a <a href=\"https:\/\/headlineusa.com\/tag\/two-tiered-justice\">two-tiered justice system<\/a> is a problem of their own making.<\/p>\n<p>In a fiery speech ahead of last Wednesday\u2019s contempt vote for Garland, Jordan offered a sharp rebuke of President <a href=\"https:\/\/headlineusa.com\/tag\/joe-biden\">Joe Biden\u2019s<\/a> top wingman and attack dog in the <a href=\"https:\/\/headlineusa.com\/tag\/justice-department\">Justice Department<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>It\u2019s simple\u2014Attorney General Garland holds information vital to the committee\u2019s legislative oversight and the House impeachment\u2019s inquiry. <\/strong>\u2026 The department has a legal obligation to turn over the requested material,\u201d Jordan said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAttorney General Garland\u2019s willful refusal consitutes contempt of Congress,\u201d he continued.\u00a0 \u201d \u2026 Our oversight and and impeachment responsibilities are too important to allow the attorney general to willfully disregard this.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The contempt charge came following Garland\u2019s refusal to turn over the audio recording of Biden\u2019s interview with special counsel <a href=\"https:\/\/headlineusa.com\/tag\/robert-hur\">Robert Hur<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/headlineusa.com\/tag\/classified-information\">classified documents<\/a> probe, which Hur cited as evidence that Biden was too senile to stand trial and that no reasonable jury would convict him due to his failing memory and lack of lucidity.<\/p>\n<p>The public release of the tapes would likely show that Biden either <a href=\"https:\/\/headlineusa.com\/tag\/perjury\">perjured<\/a> himself by putting on a bogus act for a probe that has already determined to let him off the hook\u2014or, perhaps more damningly, that the heavily scripted and choreographed Biden presented to the public conceals a commander-in-chief who is genuinely <em>non compos mentis<\/em>, despite seeking another four-year term.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the House committees undertaking an <a href=\"https:\/\/headlineusa.com\/tag\/impeachment\">impeachment<\/a> inquiry, several mainstream media outlets have sued to obtain the recordings under the <a href=\"https:\/\/headlineusa.com\/tag\/freedom-of-information-act\">Freedom of Information Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, the contempt vote against Garland resonated for Republicans on another level after Garland\u2019s overtly political decision to follow through on prosecuting Bannon and Navarro.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The true objective of the Jan. 6 committee\u2014to push a false, one-sided narrative onto the public that pinned all the blame on President Donald Trump and his supporters\u2014has become ever more apparent as additional information begins to surface.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Indeed, it amassed several terrabytes worth of data from its Star Chamber proceedings, which it then refused to hand over to Republicans upon ceding power and even attempted illegally to delete.<\/p>\n<p>Following bombshell footage last week that showed Pelosi admitting responsibility for the security failures at the U.S. Capitol, Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/headlineusa.com\/tag\/barry-loudermilk\">Barry Loudermilk<\/a>, R-Ga., denounced the committee as \u201cbiased,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/justthenews.com\/videos\/rep-loudermilk-history-should-not-accept-original-jan-6-committees-report-factual-account\">Just the News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Loudermilk: History should not accept original Jan. 6 committee\u2019s report as factual account <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XkJh7bJqFC\">https:\/\/t.co\/XkJh7bJqFC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 John Solomon (@jsolomonReports) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jsolomonReports\/status\/1800312602599260672?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 10, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201c[I]t was a political hack job, and the American people and the history books should not take this as any factual account of what happened that day,\u201d he said in an appearance on Real America\u2019s Voice.<\/p>\n<p>Because they had no direct role in anything related to the Jan. 6 uprising at the Capitol, Bannon and Navarro, along with Meadows and Trump Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino, suspected a fishing expedition was afoot to gather testimony that the committee could then use selectively for its own ulterior objectives.<\/p>\n<p>But despite citing \u201cexecutive privilege\u201d as their reason for refusing the subpoenas\u2014arguing that their private conversations with Trump were exempt from oversight\u2014Garland\u2019s DOJ pushed House Democrats\u2019 contempt charges via corrupt, anti-Trump D.C. district judges such as <a href=\"https:\/\/headlineusa.com\/tag\/tanya-chutkan\">Tanya Chutkan<\/a>, who declared that Trump had no constitutional right to shield himself from bloodthirsty Democrats\u2019 congressional tribunal.<\/p>\n<p>Pending a Supreme Court decision on <a href=\"https:\/\/headlineusa.com\/tag\/presidential-immunity\">presidential immunity<\/a> that is expected to drop Thursday morning, Chutkan is now overseeing another case against Trump\u2014special counsel <a href=\"https:\/\/headlineusa.com\/tag\/jack-smith\">Jack Smith\u2019s<\/a> prosecution charging Trump with efforts to overturn the 2020 election.<\/p>\n<p>That case was likely based heavily on the criminal referral supplied by the Jan. 6 committee, emblematic of the sort of mini-ecosystem through which congressional Democrats, corrupt DOJ prosecutors and D.C. federal judges have colluded in order to leapfrog from one political attack on Trump and his allies to the next by agreeing to validate each other.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cEveryone knows it\u2019s wrong, everyone knows this lawfare has gotten out of control<\/strong>,\u201d Jordan noted in his interview with Headline USA.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed to efforts that the House was undertaking to derail those efforts, such as a measure to defund any special counsel not approved by the Senate. (Smith is the only one who has not been.)<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, thoze efforts seemed to be mostly symbolic, an exercise in performative outrage.<\/p>\n<p>Only time may tell if Burlinson\u2019s resolution can succeed in breaking that cycle.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ben Sellers is the editor of Headline USA.
