More Air Defenses & Cross-Border Strikes Won’t Change The Ukrainian Conflict’s Dynamics<\/span><\/p>\n

The US will\u00a0redirect air defense orders<\/a>\u00a0to Ukraine and allow that country to strike Russian forces\u00a0anywhere across the border<\/a>\u00a0that are preparing to cross the frontier in its newest policy evolution. Up until now, the US was still delivering other clients\u2019 air defense orders and had officially limited its authorization of cross-border strikes to only those Russian forces that were\u00a0entering Kharkov Region<\/a>.<\/strong> The reason why both approaches changed is because Russia continues to gain the upper hand in this conflict.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Its\u00a0military-strategic dynamics<\/a>\u00a0are such that Russia has already beat NATO by far in their \u201crace of logistics<\/a>\u201d\/\u201cwar of attrition<\/a>\u201d, so much so that\u00a0Sky News<\/a>\u00a0cited a report last month to inform their audience that Russia is producing three times as many shells as NATO at one-quarter of the price. This sets the stage for a possible Russian breakthrough across the front lines that might in turn trigger a\u00a0conventional NATO intervention<\/a>, which risks\u00a0spiraling out of control<\/a>\u00a0into a Cuban-like brinksmanship crisis.<\/strong><\/p>\n

More air defenses for Ukraine and cross-border strikes against Russian forces won\u2019t have any significant effect on changing these dynamics, with their only potential impact being to temporarily delay what might very well be the inevitable. Nevertheless, the media attention that\u2019s been given to the US\u2019 newest policy evolution is intended to reinforce its reliance as an ally after it and Ukraine\u00a0clinched a security pact<\/a>\u00a0this month. That too was over-hyped, but it helped maintain the Western public\u2019s morale.<\/p>\n

Therein lies the real reason behind these three latest moves \u2013 the US-Ukrainian security pact and the US\u2019 newest policy evolutions of redirecting air defense orders to Ukraine as well as allowing it to strike Russian troops anywhere across the border \u2013 since they\u2019re really all about perception management.<\/strong> The Ukrainians know that they\u2019re getting trounced, the Russians know they\u2019re gaining ground, and the West knows that only the scenario of a conventional NATO intervention might change this.<\/p>\n

The Western public has wised up to these dynamics, however, so it\u2019s imperative for their elite to make it seem like this\u00a0proxy<\/a>\u00a0war<\/a>\u00a0hasn\u2019t been for naught and that there\u2019s still a chance of at least stopping Russia from achieving a military breakthrough despite its strategic defeat now being impossible. Even if this only delays what might soon be to come, it could also buy time for NATO to\u00a0better prepare<\/a>\u00a0for conventionally intervening in Ukraine instead of rushing in out of panic like might otherwise be the case.<\/p>\n

At the end of the day, the US\u2019 newest policy evolution was predictable, but it\u2019s being over-hyped just like all of its prior ones were as well for perception management purposes. The only variable that can change this conflict\u2019s military-strategic dynamics is a conventional NATO intervention, though that\u2019s fraught with the risk of sparking World War III by miscalculation, but it\u2019s still being seriously considered. Everything else is just a distraction from this fact.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
