{"id":1472845,"date":"2024-06-23T12:10:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-23T16:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1472845"},"modified":"2024-06-23T12:10:00","modified_gmt":"2024-06-23T16:10:00","slug":"british-children-getting-shorter-fatter-and-sicker-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/british-children-getting-shorter-fatter-and-sicker-report\/1472845\/","title":{"rendered":"British Children Getting Shorter, Fatter, And Sicker: Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">British Children Getting Shorter, Fatter, And Sicker: Report<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/world\/british-children-getting-shorter-fatter-and-sicker-report-5671262?utm_source=partner&amp;utm_campaign=ZeroHedge\"><em>Authored by Rachel Roberts via The Epoch Times,<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The authors of a damning report into children\u2019s health have called on the next government to do more to tackle the soaring level of obesity in youngsters, which they say is a \u201cticking timebomb\u201d for a lifetime of illness and comes at a huge cost to both the state and the individual.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/image%20-%202024-06-22T145037.250.jpg?itok=B8TUiq5P\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/foodfoundation.org.uk\/publications\">report<\/a> by The Food Foundation charity, released on Wednesday, concludes that<strong> \u201caggressive\u201d marketing of cheap, ultra-processed food together with diets lacking nutrition<\/strong>\u2014often fuelled by poverty as well as the food industry\u2014are behind a \u201csignificant decline\u201d in children\u2019s health.<\/p>\n<p>It finds that British children have been getting shorter, on average, since 2013, after being on an upward trajectory since 2000. While acknowledging that ethnicity plays a role in height, the report says data suggest the decline is more down to dietary deficiencies than to shifting demographics.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <strong>obesity levels in 10- and 11-year-olds have increased by 30 percent since 2006<\/strong>, while Type 2 diabetes in the under-25s has increased by 22 percent in the past five years.<\/p>\n<p>Anna Taylor, executive director at The Food Foundation, said in a statement:<em><strong> \u201cThe health problems being suffered by the UK\u2019s children due to poor diet are entirely preventable.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cPoliticians across the political spectrum must prioritise policies that give all children access to the nutrition they need to grow up healthily, as should be their right.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Childhood Obesity Could Cost \u00a38 Billion<\/h2>\n<p>Experts suggest current levels of childhood obesity could cost the country in the region of \u00a38 billion through the burden on the NHS and the benefits system if a larger percentage of the population ends up unfit for work.<\/p>\n<p>The Food Foundation has its own \u201celection manifesto\u201d urging incoming MPs to do more to ensure that good quality food is more readily available and affordable to all, as it says obesity and food related illnesses are preventable.<\/p>\n<p>Overall life expectancy as well as the number of quality years of good health a baby can expect to live when born will continue to fall without radical change, the authors predict.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The \u201caggressive promotion of cheap junk food\u201d and levels of food insecurity caused by poverty and deprivation mean that children are living in an environment that makes feeding them healthily an \u201calmost impossibly difficult challenge,\u201d the authors claim.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Food inflation and the cost-of-living crisis have exacerbated the problem, they said, as they called for action to \u201creverse the current trajectory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/image%20-%202024-06-22T145016.552.jpg?itok=2QT0Bv6C\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Jools Oliver and Jamie Oliver attend the Headline Gala Screening of 20th Century Studios &#8220;The Bikeriders&#8221; during the 67th BFI London Film Festival at the Royal Festival Hall in London on Oct. 5, 2023. Wilson\/Getty Images for Disney)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, who spearheaded a campaign for healthier school lunches in 2005, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jamieoliver\/status\/1803352838195519516\">said on social media platform X<\/a> that children are \u201cnot being given the chance to be happy, healthy people. And they deserve so much more than that.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cThere\u2019s no silver bullet to fix this, which is why we need a comprehensive approach that doesn\u2019t just tinker around the edges but revolutionises the rules and fundamentally improves the quality of food across the board. The leader who understands this and gets serious about child health will be the person who turned the tide on obesity \u2013 and won.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Food Foundation says that its mission is to \u201cchange food policy and business practice to ensure everyone, across the UK nations, can afford and access a healthy and sustainable diet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is calling for legislation around around food standards, mandatory reporting for food businesses on \u201chealth and sustainability,\u201d and a new \u201chorticultural strategy\u201d to boost fruit and vegetable production in the UK.<\/p>\n<h2>Charity Would Like Free School Meals for All<\/h2>\n<p>The charity is calling for free school meals for all children whose parents receive Universal Credit, and eventually for all children, regardless of parental income.
