This collaboration aims to help ByteDance procure\u00a0high-end chips amid a tech war between the US and China.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The people said\u00a0Broadcom and\u00a0ByteDance have yet to strike a deal on the new chip, adding that the\u00a0US chip designer is already supplying\u00a0legacy 7nm AI processors to the Chinese company&#8217;s data centers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2024-06-24_06-57-21.png?itok=uE1yCl5z\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a separate report, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/chinas-bytedance-working-with-broadcom-develop-advanced-ai-chip-sources-say-2024-06-24\/\">Reuters<\/a> source revealed that the 5nm purpose-built chip would comply with US export restrictions if the deal is finalized. The\u00a0manufacturing work for this new chip would be outsourced to Taiwan&#8217;s\u00a0Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited.<\/p>\n<p>Since Washington slapped chip export controls on China in recent years, there have been no publicly announced chip development collaborations between Chinese and US firms for 5nm or below chips.<\/p>\n<p>In March, Broadcom told investors it secured a new customer for its AI accelerator business and would be shipping products to this client in the near term. However, it did not disclose the company&#8217;s name.<\/p>\n<p>The people told Reuters that ByteDance&#8217;s tie-up with Broadcom and possible future procurement of 5nm chips allow it to reduce costs and\u00a0ensure a stable supply of higher-end chips.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The source said\u00a0TSMC is not expected to begin production of advanced chips this year, adding design work is well underway.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Securing AI chips is crucial for ByteDance&#8217;s\u00a0algorithms, which power TikTok and the\u00a0Chinese video app Douyin.
