{"id":1475131,"date":"2024-07-03T18:09:22","date_gmt":"2024-07-03T22:09:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1475131"},"modified":"2024-07-03T18:09:22","modified_gmt":"2024-07-03T22:09:22","slug":"fomc-minutes-show-vast-majority-expect-economy-to-cool-see-deflationary-effects-of-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/fomc-minutes-show-vast-majority-expect-economy-to-cool-see-deflationary-effects-of-ai\/1475131\/","title":{"rendered":"FOMC Minutes Show &#8220;Vast Majority&#8221; Expect Economy To Cool, See Deflationary Effects Of AI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">FOMC Minutes Show &#8220;Vast Majority&#8221; Expect Economy To Cool, See Deflationary Effects Of AI<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>Since the last FOMC statement on June 12, oil, gold, stocks, the dollar, and even some of the bond market are higher (in price)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/bfm1A3B.jpg?itok=5g9Li8V1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Bloomberg<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The shorter-end of the curve is now lower in yield since the last FOMC, but the long-end still higher (even with today&#8217;s yield tumble)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/bfm6600.jpg?itok=YK-9TFsD\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Bloomberg<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The US macro picture has deteriorated even more significantly relative to expectations, now at its weakest since Dec 2015&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/bfmEE07.jpg?itok=MNQHkIaA\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Bloomberg<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And thanks to today&#8217;s macro weakness, rate-cut expectations have risen back to the same levels they were immediately after Powell&#8217;s press conference&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/bfm884F.jpg?itok=cyy7bsSI\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Bloomberg<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So, given the hawkish shift in the DOTS, what does The Fed want us to know from today&#8217;s Minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the key takeaways from minutes of the Federal Reserve&#8217;s June 11-12 meeting, released Wednesday (via Bloomberg):<\/p>\n<p>Willing to wait&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>Officials <strong>did not expect it would appropriate to lower borrowing costs until \u201cadditional information had emerged to give them greater confidence\u201d that inflation was moving toward their 2% goal<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Economic expectations&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The<strong> \u201cvast majority\u201d of Fed officials assessed that economic growth \u201cappeared to be gradually cooling<\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and most participants remarked that they viewed the current policy stance as restrictive\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officials said <strong>inflation progress was evident in smaller monthly gains in the core personal consumption expenditures<\/strong> price index and supported by May consumer price data that were released hours before the rate decision<\/p>\n<p>They appear set of the narrative that AI will save the world too (through deflation)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Participants highlighted a variety of factors that were likely to help contribute to continued disinflation in the period ahead.<\/strong> The factors included continued easing of demand\u2013supply pressures in product and labor markets, lagged effects on wages and prices of past monetary policy tightening, the delayed response of measured shelter prices to rental market developments, or the prospect of additional supply-side improvements. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The latter prospect included the possibility of a boost to productivity associated with businesses\u2019 deployment of artificial intelligence\u2013related technology. <\/strong>Participants observed that longer-term inflation expectations had remained well anchored and viewed this anchoring as underpinning the disinflation process.
