New estimates indicate that global bean processing likely declined in the second quarter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/Snag_fa5fa4.png?itok=j-YxyTbq\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to six analysts and traders tracked by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-07-10\/cocoa-s-big-demand-hit-will-come-once-rally-hits-chocolatiers\">Bloomberg<\/a>, second-quarter global grindings\u2014where cocoa transforms into butter and powder used in food products\u2014likely fell from a year earlier. Estimates from European grindings likely fell 2% in the quarter,\u00a0hitting lows not seen since early 2020. All of the analysts forecasted much larger declines in the second half of the year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2024-07-10_10-01-16_0.png?itok=vtJd7gYW\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The cheap stuff is beginning to drop off, and the expensive stuff is coming in,&#8221; said Jonathan Parkman, head of agricultural sales at broker Marex Group.<\/p>\n<p>Parkman said,\u00a0&#8220;The worst of input inflation will affect the second half of this year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The grinding numbers are nowhere near the deterioration to end elevated cocoa prices, but the estimates suggest emerging\u00a0demand destruction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are more likely to see a significant change in the grind number in the second half of the year,&#8221; said Darren Stetzel, vice president of soft commodities for Asia at broker StoneX.<\/p>\n<p>Stetzel noted that the market has been forced to adapt to the scarcity of beans, which should alleviate some demand pressure.
