FBI Claims Purportedly Struggling To Crack Trump Shooter’s Phone<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0FBI<\/a>\u00a0has reportedly taken alleged Trump shooter\u00a0Thomas Matthew Crooks\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0phone to its lab in\u00a0Quantico<\/a>, Virginia, where its technicians are working to unlock it as part of the investigation into his possible motives.<\/p>\n

But according to Fox News reporter Laura Ingraham, the FBI\u2019s finest techies are struggling to crack the phone.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cAn official is telling Fox they believe the shooter acted along. We\u2019re also learning they can\u2019t get into his cellphone,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> Ingraham said on Sunday. \u201cThey have it at Quantico but haven\u2019t been able to get any data out of it.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The FBI\u2019s claim that it can\u2019t crack Crooks\u2019s phone should be treated with skepticism. The bureau has a track record of lying about such matters.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The most notorious case of the FBI claiming it couldn\u2019t crack an encrypted phone happened in December 2015, in the wake of the San Bernardino shooting, in which two shooters killed more than a dozen victims.<\/p>\n

At the time, the FBI claimed it couldn\u2019t access one of the shooters\u2019\u00a0iPhones<\/a>. The bureau sought a court order to force Apple to help the FBI break the phone\u2019s encryption.<\/p>\n

Apple resisted the FBI\u2019s coercsion, but the dispute was never fully litigated. It turned out, the FBI hired an Australian cybersecurity firm to hack the phone around March 2016 or shortly thereafter. The purported true story of how the FBI unlocked the phone wasn\u2019t told\u00a0until 2021<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A similar situation occurred in May 2020, when then-Attorney General William Barr and FBI Director\u00a0Chris Wray<\/a>\u00a0criticized Apple for not helping investigators who were attempting to gain access to two iPhones used by Mohammed Alshamrani, who launched a terror attack at the Pensacola Naval Air Station in Florida in December 2019.<\/p>\n

Wray has continued his anti-encryption throughout the years.<\/strong> In March 2021, for example, he told the Senate Judiciary Committee that encryption was stifling his agents from investigating domestic extremism.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike Alshamrani, the plotters who sought to kidnap the governor of Michigan late last year used end-to-end encrypted apps to hide their communications from law enforcement. Their plot was only disrupted by well-timed human source reporting and the resulting undercover operation,\u201d Wray said at the time.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cSubjects of our investigation into the Jan. 6 Capitol siege used end-to-end encrypted communications as well.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

According to Wray and other law enforcers, tech companies should be able to build \u201cbackdoors\u201d into their encryption that preserves privacy, while allowing for access when necessary. That, they say, strikes the proper balance between data security and national security.<\/p>\n

However, numerous tech experts, civil libertarians, and others say that it\u2019s impossible to build a backdoor that can\u2019t be exploited by hackers. <\/strong>They also say that by banning encryption, the United States would be following in the footsteps of authoritarian countries such as China, which\u00a0blocked<\/a>\u00a0the encrypted messaging app Signal.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is important to understand that any kind of back door (or front door) access for the \u2018good guys\u2019 can also be exploited by the \u2019bad guys,\u2019\u201d the pro-industry Information Technology & Innovation Foundation stated in a\u00a0July 2020 report<\/a>, in the midst of the Apple-Barr controversy.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor example, key escrow systems would introduce new attack vectors that could allow attackers to gain access to encrypted information, such as by compromising the system that maintains copies of the keys.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Guys there\u2019s nothing strange going on here. The 20 year old shooter had never used social media or posted a single thing on the internet, ever, and his phone cannot be accessed because it has a password which our government\u2019s best hackers cannot bypass. That\u2019s all. Normal stuff.<\/p>\n
