However, despite arriving first, the religion accounts for about 35-38% of the Southeast Asian population, second after Islam.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a breakdown of the largest religious group in each Southeast Asian country, along with the percentage of the population.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2024-07-21_12-14-33.jpg?itok=895awuVM\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Note: Includes all denominations and sects. *Only 14% of Vietnam is religious, of which 6% is Christian, 5% Buddhist, and 3% other religions.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In Cambodia and Thailand, where over 90% of the population is Buddhist, nearly nine-in-ten people surveyed by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/religion\/2023\/09\/12\/buddhism-islam-and-religious-pluralism-in-south-and-southeast-asia\/\">Pew Research<\/a>\u00a0said being a Buddhist was important to their national identities. More than 70% Cambodians also see Buddhism as an ethnicity one is born into.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile,\u00a0<strong>Islam<\/strong>\u00a0arrived in the 7th century, brought along with Arabian traders. More than 85% of Indonesia\u2014the world\u2019s fourth-most\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/all-the-people-in-the-world-1000-people\/\">populous country<\/a>\u2014is Muslim, helping Islam become the majority religion of Southeast Asia as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, European missionaries brought\u00a0<strong>Christianity<\/strong>\u00a0to the region in the 16th century. Most Christians in the region are Catholics.
