Public University Sued Over Alleged Use Of Student Fees To Support Leftists Political Groups<\/span><\/p>\n

A recent graduate of St. Cloud State University in Minnesota is suing the university administration, alleging that she was forced to pay a fee that went to a liberal student activist group.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Tayah Lackie filed the\u00a0lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota in May, with\u00a0assistance<\/a>\u00a0from the Liberty Justice Center and the Upper Midwest Law Center.<\/p>\n

Lackie\u2019s lawsuit contends that a mandatory fee going to a political agenda that she disagrees with violates the First Amendment because it compels speech.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cA state school can\u2019t make you pay a political group just to be enrolled,\u201d Liberty Justice Center President Jacob Huebert\u00a0said<\/a>. <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Students United scheme violates students\u2019 First Amendment rights, and we look forward to the courts saying so in our case.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The lawsuit alleges that all students at St. Cloud State must pay \u201cunion dues\u201d to a group called Students United, which \u201cadvocates for and takes positions on controversial policies and legislation, and which purports to speak on all students\u2019 behalf.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The lawsuit then proceeds to give examples of Students United making political statements and expressing potentially controversial political advocacy.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor example,\u201d the lawsuit details, \u201cStudents United has aggressively advocated for the abolition of student debt\u2014including through a website called \u2018Fck Student Debt\u2019 and a Twitter\/X account, @FckStudentDebt.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to the website, Fck Student Debt is \u2018a special project by Students United to eliminate all of the student loan debt created by higher education institutions in the state of Minnesota and to push federal legislators to cancel student loan debt,\u2019\u201d the lawsuit explains.<\/em><\/p>\n

On Students United\u2019s\u00a0website<\/a>, the group states that its \u201cvision\u201d is to \u201ccreate the model of inclusive higher education policies and leadership.\u201d<\/strong> The group currently has a \u201cDirector of Student Leadership & Equity,\u201d and each of the group\u2019s officers have pronouns following their names on their bios.<\/p>\n

Yet, despite specific political arguments being made by Students United, the lawsuit states that \u201cevery\u201d student in the Minnesota State Colleges and University system \u201cis forced to associate with and subsidize Students United and its speech\u2014even if the student disagrees with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The state of Minnesota\u00a0filed<\/a>\u00a0a motion to dismiss Lackie\u2019s complaint on July 15.<\/p>\n
