{"id":1479849,"date":"2024-07-27T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-27T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1479849"},"modified":"2024-07-27T11:00:00","modified_gmt":"2024-07-27T15:00:00","slug":"copenpay-europes-first-climate-centric-social-credit-scheme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/copenpay-europes-first-climate-centric-social-credit-scheme\/1479849\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;CopenPay&#8221; \u2013 Europe&#8217;s First Climate-Centric Social Credit Scheme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">&#8220;CopenPay&#8221; \u2013 Europe&#8217;s First Climate-Centric Social Credit Scheme<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/off-guardian.org\/2024\/07\/25\/copenpay-europes-first-climate-centric-social-credit-scheme\/\"><em>Authored by Kit Knightly via Off-Guardian.org,<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The world\u2019s first climate-related social rewards scheme came into being two weeks ago, when the city of Copenhagen officially launched it\u2019s new \u201cCopenPay\u201d system.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/copenpay-denmark-banner-1.jpg?itok=OlPdR0LF\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Through the CopenPay scheme, tourists visiting the city will be rewarded for \u201cgreen actions\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 such as using public transportation or cycling \u2013 with access to \u201ccultural experiences\u201d, free meals etc.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitcopenhagen.com\/copenpay\">For example<\/a>, arriving at the CopenHill dry ski slope by foot or on a bike will get you 20 free minutes of ski time, while anyone who volunteers at an organic urban farm will get a free lunch (vegetarian, naturally).<\/p>\n<p>The official\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitcopenhagen.com\/copenpay\">CopenPay website<\/a>\u00a0describes the purpose of the system as follows:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u2026to encourage sustainable behaviour and enrich the cultural experience of visitors and residents in Copenhagen by transforming green actions into currency for cultural experiences.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wonderfulcopenhagen.com\/wonderful-copenhagen\/international-press\/copenhagen-launches-new-green-experience-economy-initiative-copenpay\">WonderfulCopenhagen.com<\/a>\u00a0adds:<\/p>\n<p><em>There is a need to change the mindset of tourists and encourage green choices [\u2026]Through CopenPay we therefore aim to incentivize tourists\u2019 sustainable behaviour while enriching their cultural experience of our destination. It is an experimental and a small step towards creating a new mindset [\u2026] The hope is not only to continue the pilot project, but also to inspire other cities around the world to introduce similar initiatives.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now, complimentary organic meals and free windsurfing lessons might seem benign enough, but any talk of \u201cchanging mindset\u201d and\/or \u201cencouraging behaviour\u201d makes my brain itch.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s pretty easy to see through the happy-clappy tone of the promotion to the heart of the issue, it\u2019s right there in their own words:\u00a0<strong><em>Transforming green actions into currency<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is climate change based behavioral modification. This is a social credit system. Small scale and optional, sure, but there\u2019s no denying that\u2019s what it is.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>For now<\/em>\u00a0it\u2019s optional and only for tourists. They are testing the waters. Barring a catastrophic failure it won\u2019t stay that way for long.<\/strong> They likely won\u2019t ever make it mandatory to take part, rather \u2013 like bank accounts and cellphones \u2013 opting out will simply be too difficult for most people to bother with.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually \u201crewarding green actions\u201d will segue into \u201cpunishing\u00a0<em>non<\/em>-green actions\u201d.
