{"id":1481393,"date":"2024-08-03T14:30:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-03T18:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1481393"},"modified":"2024-08-03T14:30:00","modified_gmt":"2024-08-03T18:30:00","slug":"worldcoin-spreads-across-europe-with-austria-digital-id-launch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/worldcoin-spreads-across-europe-with-austria-digital-id-launch\/1481393\/","title":{"rendered":"Worldcoin Spreads Across Europe With Austria Digital ID Launch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Worldcoin Spreads Across Europe With Austria Digital ID Launch<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/worldcoin-europe-austria-digital-id-launch\"><em>Authored by Savannah Fortis via CoinTelegraph.com,<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Worldcoin Foundation has announced that its World ID-issuing orb has been introduced in Austria, which adds another location in Europe with access to its digital identity verification technology.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>As of July 31, residents of Vienna over the age of 18 can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/worldcoin.org\/blog\/announcements\/world-id-verification-launches-austria-increasing-proof-humanness-access-europe\">verify<\/a>\u00a0their World ID at several locations throughout the city, joining a network of over 6.3 million users worldwide.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/a7bf6fc7-97a2-465d-b29d-254901a1.jpg?itok=kLtgd8PR\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Worldcoin in Europe<\/h2>\n<p>Tools for Humanity, the Germany-based company operating Worldcoin, is complying with the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The project has also consulted with the Austrian data protection authority to address privacy and data security concerns.<\/strong> The company emphasized that World ID verification does not collect additional personal data beyond the iris scan required for the process.<\/p>\n<p>Friederike Lumbroso-Baumgartner, the general manager at Tools for Humanity for Germany, Austria and Switzerland, stated that the project aims to rapidly expand its reach:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cOur goal is to enable as many people as possible to obtain the World ID quickly.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Worldcoin said that Austrians interested in the initiatives can become Worldcoin ambassadors to help spread \u201cawareness and understanding of the project.\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The launch in Austria follows a similar launch that recently took place in Germany, which comes after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/german-government-watchdog-launched-worldcoin-probe\">an investigation into Worldcoin<\/a>\u00a0by the Bavarian State Office for Data Protection Supervision, or BayLDA, over concerns of biometric data collection.<\/p>\n<p>Reports revealed that the BayLDA probed Worldcoin\u2019s activities back in November 2022.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The company has faced skepticism from other governmental agencies across the globe, including in Spain, where\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/worldcoin-spain-activity-suspension\">it has halted operations<\/a>\u00a0for the time being.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Mixed reception<\/h2>\n<p>Along with Spain, it has been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/hong-kong-halts-worldcoin-privacy-violations\">asked to stop services in Hong Kong<\/a>, where the region\u2019s Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data concluded that Worldcoin\u2019s operations violated its Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>At the same time, the company has been actively working toward compliance with local privacy laws, in an attempt to gain more trust from users and regulators worldwide.<\/strong> In May,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/worldcoin-beefs-up-security-open-sourcing-biometric-data\">Worldcoin upped its security<\/a>\u00a0by open-sourcing its biometric data system and confirmed that users can now securely delete old iris codes.<\/p>\n<p>After dropping operations in Kenya in 2023 due to a probe opened by local authorities,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/kenyan-police-drops-worldcoin-probe\">Kenya dropped its investigation<\/a>\u00a0in June, saying \u201cno further police action\u201d will be taken.<\/p>\n<p><strong>However, Worldcoin has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/worldcoin-price-manipulation-allegations-unlock-delay\">faced new allegations<\/a>\u00a0related to price manipulation and a scam involving its native Worldcoin (<a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/worldcoin-wld-price\">WLD<\/a>) token.
